What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

They are through the frame not on top

 

I've been looking for a spare tire tool kit lately because the PO obviously has mine, so today I looked with a flashlight under there to just see about making me a tool by welding something with a flat head onto some rebar.. Upon looking I made an unfortunate discovery.. My spare tire has a lock on it with one of the lug wrench looking keys on it. Of course, PO obviously has that one too. Dealer gave me no guarantee that they would have a key to fit it, and almost acted more sure that they wouldn't. I don't actually need or want the lock on there, has anybody successfully removed their lock and if so how? Thanks.

I'd say your best bet is to cut off the hanger and find another one...

^^ That, or ask another local taco owner if you can borrow theirs. That's what I did.

 

His has a lock on it though, so that won't work....

 

Yeah I mean I'm gonna make the tool to lower the tire, I just can't get to it since I don't have the key. I don't guess I can cut or pry just the lock off though

 

I thought those were standard.

 

It's a PITA to get to, and to remove the whole assembly you need to remove the bed.

 

Neither of my Tacoma's have been locked.

All you need is a hook on the end to get mine down.

 

I wish mine wasn't locked.. Kinda pissed that it is haha.

 

Try Discount Tire or a similar place that sells locking lugs. I'm guessing they will have a key that fits. Looks fairly standard.

If you can get a socket wrench up i between the spare and the tire winch, you can remove the winch. I think it is a 12mm, maybe 10mm. Remember to support the spare so you don't drop it on your toes.

The spare tire locks were a dealer item. I had one but when I got rear-ended the body shop replaced the tire carrier but didn't replace the lock. The key is long gone or I'd send it to you.

 

I think they are different. But I tossed my old leafs so I guess it don't matter for me....

 

I have a big pile of truck scrap metal at my office lol. The leafs are somewhere in that pile. I don't think they are the same size either. But doesn't hurt to measure. If they are the same width then I would be able to use it right?
