Is the 6 speed really that bad?

I personally have no complaints about it. Been driving a manual since I was 16

I mean, it really depends what you are used to and what you use it for. I've driven one and it wasn't bad at all. I think a main complaint is the RPM's in 6th at highway speed.

I had one in my 2005; truck had 80,000 when it got hit and totaled.
I liked it, and had no problems with it.

It is great, don't let people fool you. If you like driving manuals then go for it, if you can find one. I have a 4x4 DCSB and the manual, once I got a TRD knob, is absolutely great to drive.

In comparison to our other car, a manual 5 series, it drives like a tractor, but that's the fun of it. The layout is the same as the BMW and they seem like perfect compliments to each other. Hers is as slick as duck shit, mine is clanky and awesome. She prefers the release point of mine, and the low rpm shifts. I drive my truck like I drive her inline 6 and my gas gauge moves constantly.

Seriously though, I think it's a fine piece of engineering. I wouldn't own this truck if it didn't come in manual. It WAS the selling point for me.

I got one last fall and put 20k miles on it so far with no complaints. I do need to upgrade the throwout bearing though.

It isn't perfect but I don't think it's nearly as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. The worst part for me is the throttle hang, takes awhile to get used to that.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy the manual again.

Throwout bearing wear has been mitigated by a TSB Toyota released a couple of years ago. And there's a URD steel sleeve retrofit kit that can be installed to fix the problem if it develops.

There are few individually minor drawbacks with the 6-speed:

    • Engine RPMs stay high briefly when you let off the gas, which slows the shifting.
    • 6th in the manual is shorter than 5th in the auto, so highway gas milage is 1-2 mpg worse than the auto.
    • In a drag race, the manual is slower than the auto. It may be attributable to an extra shift necessary with the manual.

The sheer fact Toyota still offers a manual transmission makes the Tacoma somewhat unique in the pickup truck world nowadays. Pick the 6-speed if you want it out of sheer personal preference. There's no "logical" reason. The 5-speed auto happens to be very good and very robust (it's sized to take the torque of the 4.7L V8 in the previous-gen Tundra), and it has a nice shift gate to allow easy manual downshifts.

The homogenized police are coming for you!

I have 105k on my 08 6-speed. No transmission issues. Had some problems with the clutch assembly coming loose a while back, but I seem to have managed to get in cranked down tight.

    I am happy with it

    Fixed. One word, cornering.

Not trying to start anything, but the manual is better than the auto if you drive enthusiastically around corners.

You also get the handbrake in the manual which is way cooler:).

No complaints from me but I have only owned it since January...2006 DCSB TRD OR with 79K when I bought it. I actually like it.
