You can't stop it from downshifting unnecessarily, thus unlocking the torque converter and heating up the trans fluid....

Just my opinion, I like the control the manual gives me.

You can use the clutch to gradually apply engine braking coming into a corner. Then accelerate coming out of the corner (floor it if you want) and it will stay in the gear you pick. This is especially useful when there's another corner coming up shortly.

Just the way I like it. I know many like the auto and that's great, I just think some people may be persuaded away from the manual which there's no need for. There are benefits to both.

Yeah... my bad wasn't very clear. It's an 06 I got last fall and I've put 20k on it just hit 70k and I'm the 3rd owner. Also an X ftw!

You're using slipping the clutch to control engine braking? --eek!---

You can hold the auto in any gear you want. I do it all the time.
Downshift, upshift; whichever. The auto works pretty well that way.

1,000 miles on my 2014 6 speed and I love it. It was the selling point for me. My only complaint is that shifting is a bit stiff, but it's a truck. My Scion xA shifts VERY smoothly and easily, the Taco takes a bit more effort. Definitely more of a tractor feel, but I like that.

The Auto is actually rated for more HP than the manual, that could be for many different reasons including; bearings, clutch material, housing thickness (bearing mount), etc.
When Off-roading you can keep one foot on the gas and the other on the clutch, and one hand on the shift and one hand on the hand brake.
With the Auto you have one foot on the brake, one on the gas, on hand on the wheel, and the other hand holding your favorite beverage.
The throttle is drive by wire, so the same pedal position can be 1gal/hr or 6gal/hr, so the whole better control with manual is just BS.
You can however hold the tranny in a particular gear, where the auto will downshift.

I would never own my truck (manual 6spd) in an urban setting.
I have had the TOB replaced under warranty at about 45k miles.
I'm at 63k now with no more issues.
Yes it runs high rpm when shifting, yes it gets worse gas mileage ( I just got 17mpg last tank) but not by much, and yes the TOB and a little slower during acceleration.

All that and for my mountain country driving, I love mine.
Again if I lived near a city and was in the highway often I'd get a auto.
It's a tough decision since the autos are so damn good.

Are you saying I should just pop the clutch when I'm going 60 and coming from 6th to 3rd or 4th? That would be eek.

Unless you have the auto in the lowest gear allowed at the time, when you floor it, the tranny will downshift.

The big question for me is it seems like a lot of guys with autos may be more defensive than the ones with manuals. Why is that?

I have a 2008 with the 6-speed. It has seen lots of trips to the beach towing a 21 ft. boat, and lots of hilly trips to the lake.

My biggest complaint is the gas mileage. I hate that it doesn't get the gas mileage that the auto does, but I can't really complain I don't guess.

My throw out bearing has started to squeal, and I'm at just over 57,000 miles. I need to get that fixed, I'll probably just put the URD sleeve kit in it.

I did put Amsoil synthetic gear lube in it, and that seemed to quite the whole transmission a little, not that it's loud really to begin with.

    I'm just 17 though, what do I know?
