Is the 6 speed really that bad?

I've heard a few complaints about throwout bearings and pedal squeak, other than that I wouldn't let it stop me from owning one.

IMO.... I had a few V6 standard Jeeps, in PA they're a PITA, in Ohio, no big deal. I'm tired of shifting. If I were driving a built up muscle car, then yes, 3 pedals, in my Tacoma, only 2. Not to mention that my wife could never move it in the driveway.

This is a feature I'd pay extra for, if I had a wife.

+1 for other people not being able to drive my shit. I love that. Gives me an extra excuse to tell people they can't drive it LOL.

My TOB is screaming now. 56k. Took it in once when it started, they suggested I wait until it was just under 60k and they would take care of it under the TSB. Going in soon. Not that big of a deal. I'd replace it myself if I thought I needed a new clutch, but it feels great, and I have always been pretty gentle with it.

That being said, I've had both an Auto and a 6 speed in a 2nd Gen, and the Auto is far better.

    I just like to shift...

Except for the Tacoma, you would select the manual transmission because it is the more rugged solution, and provide advantages, including less maintenance.

Perhaps it would be more clear if I stated:

For any other vehicle, selecting a manual transmission would provide a more rugged solution, requiring less maintenance, BUT, the OPPOSITE is true for the Tacoma.

Now two posters who both have automatics are arguing about when they would buy a manual non Tacoma, on a manual thread located on a Tacoma website.

This makes sense. I know a couple people that only have the auto because they needed the DCLB. Shame they are stuck with it

Nah not really. It will get swapped with a MT (most likely a SM 465) when the time comes, for now it's a work truck and serves it's purpose well.

I actually had an 87 5-spd with the 22R. Put 220K on it. Better than sliced bread. Never replaced the clutch or the TOB. Did replace the head gasket, twice, and it wasn't babied.
Test drove a couple of used MTs that were CPO. Trannies felt like a slush box. Saw very few threads about the sealed auto tranny that only needs service at 100k.
So I bought the auto with a tow package, that comes with a tranny cooler. At 55k, no problems.
How's your TOB? Changed your tranny oil? Use synthetic?
