Will probably get some smart a$$ comments on this but I went to the local Toyota rip off center today to get some oil pan drain plug washers and was shocked when they told me the price for one. It was $2.03 for one, I was speechless. He then said I can work on the price depending on how many you buy and I said 5, that brought the price down to $1.19. Now get this, me wife drives an accord and the dealer is next door to Toyota so when over their to pick some up for her car also, price .37 cents for one. I don't mind paying for the proper parts for my vehicles but I have to draw the line somewhere. Any recommendations on where to get these from?

You have to pay attention. Some dealers are notorious for being total rip offs. My local dealer here is ridiculous when it comes to parts. Went to get a cabin filter for the Tundra. They wanted $26 dollars. We already researched the price before my wife went to get the tire rotation. My wife laughed then he came down to $21. I told her to politely thank the gentleman and leave.

You don't need an oil drain plug washer/gasket. I have used the same once since 2006.

Sounds like the time I was in a pinch for a lug nut and walked into a dodge dealer. The parts guy came out with an obvious used take off lug nut he tried to charge me 10 dollars for.!

I bought three oil filters at the dealership and the guy at the counter opened each box and dropped in a gasket.

I buy the filters by the case and the gaskets from trdparts4u and end up paying $6.40 total per oil change for OEM filter and gasket. I will have to check my local dealer and see what his price is tomorrow just out of curiosity.

jesus people sure do like to complain. I sold parts for 4 years at Toyota in town and had probably most of you "forum warriors" tell me off. Not my fault Toyota pricing is higher than most. I always sold things at list price unless you're a customer who always came in and bought from me. Even MY cost which is cost +10% for a cabin filter is $18.

I know some dealerships are out to get you but i hate coming on day after day saying "get this". No, you dont like the price, ask if they can do better. If they cant then dont buy it. Its quite simple. Yes you can buy anything online for probably cheaper but youll pay shipping and youll wait most likely longer than overnight or two days depending on the part. Also you wont pay shipping at the dealer if they have to order it.

Sometimes i think people on forums just come on to bitch

And your point? 2 bucks for a 3 cent part is stupid. Some people are trapped, as they might not have a hardware store local to them, so they have no choice but to buy from the dealer. The OP isn't bashing you in a personal way, just the dealership. Don't take it so personal.

it costs what it costs. Its not that hard to understand. Dealerships have a set price to push the product. If its too expensive than dont buy it. Not like the guy behind the counter is purposely marking up a $0.25 washer just to fuck you.

100% agree here. The employees don't set the price, and they sure aren't out to ruin your day. They prices are set, that's what the customer pays for oem.

It also depends on the demographics of the area. The pencil pushers look at numbers on paper. They determine what the price should be in a certain area, and that's what gets set.

You are right, Toyota is doing the lion's share of the ripoff. :D Toyota's gross margin on parts is on average 300%. The dealer then tacks on 30%-40%. That's why a TYC cabin filter is $4 on Rock Auto, while a Denso filter is $6...

some of the markup i saw just by the set calculations between list and sale price is absurd. I often took off the mark ups on items to prevent confrontation because i knew the customer would shit their pants.

The OP is not attacking the salesperson.
