Net metered, so technically still on the grid. If they were to shut off power, I would lose power as well. Being totally off the grid essentially doubles the price.

Not without a bank of batteries to store it. I don't think you'd want to run the house directly off the panels. With batteries, it would be considered a hybrid system. I don't think they allow hybrid systems here in San Diego.

Yeah, that sounds about right, not sure on the legallities but I think theres a few around that are off of it & credit back to SDG&E or something along those lines..

 

If they credit back to SDG&E, then they're net-metered (grid-tied). Their panels generate electricity and excess not used at the moment is pushed to SDG&E. Then at night, you pull off the grid. They calculate how much you used versus how much you generated. Each month, I get a statement showing my current balance. At the end of the year, I square up with SDG&E. If I used more than I generated, I pay them the difference. If I use less than I generate, they pay me a wholesale rate back. Technically, I don't have to pay a power bill until the year ends. They don't recommend doing that because you might wind up with a big bill.

If you're off the grid, you have to store it in batteries for times when the sun doesn't shine. You would also want an alternative such as wind power. SDG&E is not involved.

What is the basis for the ticket? The lawn is your property.

In my city, the neighbors will rat on you if you park on the lawn. They file a complaint with the city and you get an enforcement order in the mail.

 

No parents to do that for them....
