It happens all year round. Just more now. But there are plenty of spots it's just windy-most of those are up in the hills.

 at least I had the good sense to pack up and find a more sheltered spot when I got stuck in a wind storm last summer! having flashbacks of my tent closing up on me now....

That would be terrible. I turned mine in the hopes that it would help. But if it folded with my big ass in it I would have been impressed.

It's always a good idea to orient a tent to the wind. I wonder if it's the RTT mounted end that you would aim into the wind?

 now i have an idea of what an insect feels like when a venus flytrap devours it

ladder away from the wind. i made the mistake of setting up with the ladder facing the wind and when the gust hit it scooped the tent up. i was helpless to do anything at that point

Holy cow, yours folded on you? Yeah I turned mine to where the mounted part of the base was towards the wind. It worked out ok for me.

Definitely ladder away from the wind. Otherwise the guys are in for a rude awakening in the middle of the night while secretly trying to pee from the tent. :anonymous:

yup, thought i shared that story in here but maybe not...
i had stopped and set up camp in the rain and was inside just taking five, waiting for a break in the storm to cook dinner, when i heard the wind coming towards me. it was so loud i knew it was going to be a really strong wind so i braced myself and stretched my arms and legs out to all 4 corners thinking that that would help keep the tent open. the truck was rocking and the tent picked up and tried to close. i doubt it got any further than 15* or 20* closed but it felt so much worse  when the wind gust passed the tent wasn't fully open as the ladder had gotten pushed under the truck and was more vertical than it should have been. i ended up climbing out the other end of the tent for fear of damaging something by climbing out the ladder end without things being properly supported. i packed up and moved off the ridge of the mountain and into a more sheltered area. will never forget that trip

You could have posted it, when I go to work it's for a few days in a row then I don't really get on TW. That's crazy it happened. I could see it though, that's why I turned mine around. I was just hoping with the wind and rain we would make it out dry in the morning. We did and I was very impressed with the RTT after that trip!

I've got an awning on the way from JLee. Can't wait to test it next weekend in WY.

You haven't had any issues with deflection of your tent support legs? Looks like the entire thing would bend in a sharp corner, or heavy bump.

I don't think it would take an awful lot of force to pop those mounts off the side of the trailer off as well..

Just curious - I could be completely off base.

I know even on my rack, I don't feel 100% comfortable traveling on road without having a webbing strap securing the tent to the tubing.

One way I fix this problem is with 2 pieces of rebar bent at an L on one end. I hammer one on each side of the lower step of the ladder (back and front) so it will not take off.

That's a great Idea, I was wondering if anyone steaked down the ladder. I was going to experiment this weekend with mine.

I had the ladder staked down with tents stakes and some rope but the ground was so soggy from all of the rain that the stakes pulled right out when the wind hit.
