Try running a few tanks of 91 through it. You should get a bit better MPG's too. See if it goes away. Air temp and your fuel/air mixture causes it.

Define "pinging" if you are refering to the diesel like engine noise, that is normal on a tacoma, cause the exhaust manifold is very thin, kind of like headers. I did a experiment to confirm my theory, by wraping them in fireproof insulation cloth taped with muffler tape. The noise almost dissapeared. I personally like the distinct noise, cause it allows me to pretend is a four cyl turbo diesel, like it should have been!

Another one with this problem. What year is your truck?
Why so many pinging problems recently? If you search, most of the pinging issues are pretty recent. I've had my truck since 2010 and just noticed the pinging issue recently. I always pay attention to noises from my engine and I do not remember at all hearing my truck ping. I have alway used premium 91 gas here in CA.

I notice mine more in hot temps, when is cooler it does not do it.

My pinging is when I'm cruising g 30 to 40 miles at 1500 to 2000 RPMs in high gear and I hit the gas moderately

No way to tell, but it should not ping on 87 oct. You need to take it in and have it checked before you damage the engine. Something is not right.

Problem with that is when you take it to the dealer they tell you its normal and to pack sand pretty much. Everyone is having this issue it seems like in o/d at around 1500-2000rpm and as stated above this seems to be occurring much more frequently now.

Are you sure it's not the taco tick tick tick tick tick tick. If it is pre detonation, the manual says that some is normal. If it's constant try a different octane.

Only fix is to go open headers. You'll never hear that pinging again.

I think this is part of the problem. Too high of a gear for the low speed you are going. The 4.0L is subject to ping more so than most engines from what I have read. I would run a higher octane gasoline. Try 89 octane and step it up to 91 if that doesn't do the trick.

Hey! I was running a regular gas 87 octane turbo diesel!...it happens when you put in a new stereo head unit and you have extremely bad alternator whine from grounding issues. With the volume turned up really high with no music it sounded more like one of those quiet diesels, where you just hear the turbo... There was no turbo delay upon acceleration. :burnrubber:

The truck is automatic, there is not a lot for me to do. It shouldn't ping regardless.

Except run a higher octane gasoline...

I did not mean that it was your fault. Just that at lower rpm in higher gears will cause lugging and pinging.
