I second this. You'll wear out several bikes before you wear out these pedals.

I've been looking at the crank bros candy pedals. What's gonna be so crazy about the new HT clips?

the ht are interesting like a mix of spd and time pedals...should be cool to see how they do.

as far as crank bros goes, ill be honest ive never ridden them but I used to ride times before SPDs and man the difference in durability is crazy. I don't see crank bros being more durable than times so unless i was getting crank bros pedals for cheap or free i would never use them. at least where I usually ride because of all the rocks. ive been using the shimano style posted above (base version) for like a year and they are really good. I use them with post platform style clipless shoes and XC style in all kinds of terrain. the cage has a few gashes in it but the clip mech seems the same as when i bought them.

    Hmmm.

A buddy I ride with, who is a really good and aggressive rider, rides the crank bros candy pedals and loves them. He's ridden the same pair for a few years now on a variety of terrain and they've been holding up for him. I'm going to be buying a new pair of pedals/clips/shoes soon and am looking at all available options.

I really like mine. I have been running them for a few years. For me, I like the float. Allows your feet to move around a bit more than the SPD.

That's what I've heard. I think I'd like the float the candy pedals offer. What kind of $ am I looking at for a pair of candy pedals and a pair of decent shoes to go along with them??

I'm still rolling an old pair of Lake's that I like. Can't really help with the shoe except to say for the flats, I'd go with a 5.10-they fit really well for me.

If you shop around, you can find pedals for between $50 and $100. There are three different ones. I would stay away from the Candy 1// and go with a 3// or 2//. The big difference is bearing and material.

Jordan, you gotta quit taking the returns home. They're already broken :D

Serious note. A lot of pedals, not just CB that are 'light weight' have issues especially along the pedal's axle. To make them light weight, they often skimp on material-and this is what causes the failure. For the average rider, it doesn't matter.

Just finished building this one over the last few days. I've dabbled in bike maintenance before but I've always wanted to build a bike completely on my own, so I bought the frame and components, started reading and dove head first and here's the result. There were some difficult / frustrating parts, but the satisfaction of doing it all myself was totally worth it.

Total investment in parts = $90

29er On One Scandal 19", Reba 100mm fork, XT groupset, Stan's wheels w/ Hope hubs.

Never owned (or ridden) a 29er before, but a quick trip around the block and I'm hooked. Fast and light. Should be a fun change of pace from my Bottlerocket.

Picked up a set of Shimano clipless and some Giro shoes. Can't see myself riding a bike any other way after one day on the trails.

    Yeah.
Good choice! Everyone I have known with Crankbros eggbeaters has beat them on a rock and destroyed them at least once. The Candies offer some protection for the mechanism and would be an OK choice.

I just rode in a mudfest, and even with mud/rock/stick/leaf caked shoes I could still clip into my XT's without a problem.

I would find it hard going back to flats at this point.

Haha, my bad. I meant tools, not parts.

I wish I only had to invest $90 in parts.

Edit: that Yeti is awesome. Love the color.

Big tires, big lift, Lots of stuff's.
I ride the crank brothers mallets, and candies, my buddies that race xc love the egg beaters. They shed mud very well, I've never down hilled with them
Because I never clipped in on any of my down hill hikes but for xc riding I like them better than the rest. It's all my opinion I don't like to
fight the pedal getting back in when riding muddy areas. I've also been on them for years and never broke one on a rock here in CO, but then again I've never broken any other clipless pedal either.
