edit. where he was is between 3k and 3500 feet, and you can see pretty far north in the winter. also it is about 15 miles but some old logging roads not much air pollution and nothing around to make colored lights high in the sky to the north.

Generally speaking you won't see them much (or very well) from late May to early August. One of the best displays I ever caught was in the last week of August 2006 up at Eielson AFB by Fairbanks. We were staying on base while taking my son up for his first year at UAF. Went out to the van for something about 11:30 PM and it literally took my breath away. Full spectrum array. Went back in and got the wife and boys, we drove out by the lake on base and watched the show for well over an hour. There's a lot of science involved in it; I've tried to understand why they come and go, but got lost in the concepts and terminology. Seems they haven't been as active the last 6 years or so as compared to our first 6 years up here. My experiences FWIW.

Mid-west US you can see them farther south than on the coasts because the magnetic pole is not the same as the rotational pole.



You've got to be pretty far north in Europe. You can see where the magnetic pole is compared to the axis.
Right this minute, in extremely dark areas, extremely light aurora are visible in southern Illinois.

 

I knew Rich would come through with an understandable explanation.

 

Looks like some really sweet displays in Nunavut right now if you're far enough south for it to be dark.

 

Might be dark enough in about an hour ... I'll check it out; slow at work tonight anyway.
