I knew "J-pod" sounded familiar! One of my professors last quarter is a researcher studying Southern Resident Killer Whales (including J-pod, which I just looked up in my notes to make sure). Some of her research went directly into creating stricter regulations on how close whale watching vessels can get to killer whales.
Amazing to see how old they can get!

But humans are at the top of the chain of life and have dominion over all of god's creatures. It is divine providence that we do with them as suits our needs, be it sustenance or amusement.

So the people who take wild wolves and raise them as pets and as companions…did they not evolve? How bout all these other dogs or even other animals that have been domesticated? Whales can do fine.

Monkeys are intelligent too, how come they have to be kept in pens? Howcome we get to watch them at zoos?

Anyhow, congrats to j-2…she lucky she be staying out of the whaling ships way.

Interesting to note that after reading some more on J2 I found that she was actually captured with most of the rest of her pod in the early 70's but was determined to be too old by the Seaworld buyers and released , I'll have to find that article again

Whalers have never taken Orcas , not enough oil when compared to whales like the humpback , I also don't think you grasp the concept of evolution or domestication

Funny. I don't know if Granny is a 103 year old Orca just because they say she is. They obviously have an agenda as does sea world. But I do agree Sea world needs to end the captivity of Orca's, Dolphins and other mammals. I don't go to sea world or zoo's. Humans are a cancer on the earth its sad how we cage animals for our own enjoyment. There is another documentary about Elephants that I saw on HBO. I was shocked by how cruel the trainers were. Made me want to find one of those trainers and beat the living shit out of them..

I don't know that there is an agenda with the age estimate of Granny , seeing how scientists have been tracking her and the rest of J pod for over 40 years , but I would agree that the estimate of her age has been pulled into the debate on Orca captivity that has been re-ignited by Blackfish

I agree she is old. But how old exactly who knows for sure. But the real issue is the Orca's in captivity. They should not be kept in these pools for ignorant humans to gawk at.

You can't just take an orca that has lived in a tank for a decade and plop it into the ocean and expect it to survive. It won't know how to find food because it's been hand fed for its entire life. The only viable way to deal with these orcas now it to let them live out their life in sea world and not capture or breed any more.

not let them breed anymore? how can we deprive them of that.

and if we free the whales, only some people will be happy But then those people will be sad when the whale dies, so they will blame sea world and be mad at people who didnt release them sooner.
The people who wan t them freed believe they will go back to natural instincts.maybe they should group up and buy the whales from sea world, so they can release it themselves.

The only animals that come with a the instincts to survive from birth are reptiles. Reptiles come right out of the shell ready to take on the world. Mammals on the other hand, learn everything from parents and siblings

If you don't draw blood, you're doing it wrong!
Thanks for posting this Bob -- I just read the article to my G/F and she started freaking out...apparently she used to save her allowance when she was a little girl to donate to the J-Pod, and Granny was her adopted Orca. This made her day :)
