    Stock, they kick ass off road. That's the only thing they're made for. They should do well.

    I've spent the last couple days researching to figure out all I need and how it's wired. I got the $38 uniden, 4' tunable firstick antenna, antenna spring, plain antenna mount bolt that accepts the PL plug, 18' PL to PL coax cable, SWR meter, I figure i'd get 2 big washers to hold the bolt to my bed lining at the rail by the rear fender.:confused:


    That's messed up:facepalm:

    It's an aluminum box isn't it? If you're concerned about the ground, you could just run a ground wire from the mount to the bed rail or chassis of the truck (or if your box is bolted on like mine, to one of the box-to-bed rail mounting bolts).

    Sure. It's not ideal for the ground plane, but unless you do the roof mount like mine, it's as close as you'll get. The downside with the roof thing is that you have to run a short antenna unless you want to smack it into every damn thing and that means you'll have a narrow tuning band. For instance, while my mounting location is in the ideal spot, I'm still only getting a 1.8 or 1.9 SWR on 1 & 40 with my 2' antenna, where as Spruce is getting a 1.6 SWR because his 4' antenna has a wider tuning band(I think...I have a 4' Firestik brand new in the packaging that I need to mount and see if that brings my SWR down. I just haven't decided if I want to open the packaging just to test it or sell it unopened). Unfortunately, a 4' antenna would just be ridiculously tall mounted on my roof so running it like that is out of the question. Oh, and on 20, Spruce and I are both getting around a 1.1-1.2 SWR.

    well the flex antenna if supposed to have a little worse transmit strength so im not sure if thats gonna effect the SWR. I might need help from some people once i get the cb so i can tune it.

    I mounted mine right behind the cab in the center of the bed rail that way I'm getting a good ground plane off the roof. I would say its the next best place after centered in the roof.

    That's how I made my mount cause i have a tonnau cover also but I used stainless steel, I also grounded the mount to the frame with a piece of wire.

    how do you get a GP off the roof if its mounted on the bed rail :confused:

    i read running ground wires less then 12g is going to effect things. best bet is to use a short piece of braided wire for a ground

    My 4' antenna puts it about 2' above the roof. I used a piece of 12 or 14ga wire to ground my mount & have no problems. Lee & I tested it out & it transmitted & received loud & clear.

    Well...as long as your SWR is okay. If it's too high (around 3), it could damage your radio. Then again, there were a lot of guys at the January meet that couldn't receive more than half the length of the column. IIRC, these were the ones that had 2' antennas mounted to the bed rails so they barely stuck up above the roofline. I had no trouble hearing radio traffic from one end to the other though. I just couldn't transmit due to a bad mic.

    theres been good reviews on the cb and good reviews on the antenna i got, so its all gonna come down to me tuning it
