Well did some work with a spool gun today attempting to weld up the pontoons of a boat. 20 year old aluminum did not make it fun. And that's interesting to know about the half pull of the trigger on the spool gun to keep the gas flowing. Ill have to practice with that.

Would that prevent the crater from forming at the end of the weld also?

crater will always form unless you build it up before you stop welding.

im nto sure if im right when i do this but its what i do. when i get to the end i build up the puddle a little and then stop welding and then put a little tack on top of the crater. all of that is done in about .5 seconds

and the most important part the root.. didn't pull the puddle onto my bevel and ended up with knots for tacks

Soap is your friend, or scotch brite finishing disks.

I hate flap wheels, done applications I use them but usually try to stay away from them.

I can't say anything about the product you linked, but use soap, no joke it works with most any abrasives.

a bit pricey but this is what we use,
    http://www.shop3m.com/abrasives/abr...-and-blending-disc-tn-quick-change-group.html

there are others from different companies for cheaper.

These work way better then flap wheels

Sorry, yeah. I meant flap disks. We don't use flap wheels at work.
We use Pearl 60 grit discs.

I meant disks too. Most of the stuff we do has to be flat crisp edges, flap disks aren't great for that, though the do have their place. I had actually never really used one much until I built my bumper, I ended up just taking some used ones from work that were going to be thrown away. The just work done much faster she give much more control.

Even with pewter we use the 1.5" roloc scotchbrite, they clog but still work great.

Never had a problem with it, pretty much everything we do has to be perfectly flat/smooth.

Wait what? how would you electrocute yourself? Run some bar soap on the pad don't see that electrocuting yourself, plus it makes it smell good. And it's no more messy then all the metal you grind off.

White bar soap, never heard about using liquid soap. It won't hurt the grinder, what really fucks with them along with any power tools, including welders is the grinding dust, good idea to blow them out every so often.

    What grinder do you have?

Beeswax, never heard of that either. But yeah regular whit bar soap works great.

I used a HF for awhile worked well and never missed a beat, we have dewalts, bosch, Milwaukee, and metabo. My favorite is the bosch slim ones, they aren't as heavy duty as others but I used the shit out of the two I have at home and they work great. Plus they are soooo much more comfortable in my hand, only thing I don't like it the switch, I prefer something that unlocks if unplugged

I might give beeswax a try I could see it working well, though don't believe everything you hear on the webs, especially from me:p

Ryobi makes decent stuff. Exactly what I did, I've got two and would love to have 3 or 4.
