OP took advantage of a sign that was written by an idiot.

The sign said that the 16oz urinal saves 88% more water than the gallon urinal.

The sign is saying that the gallon urinal saves water, and that the 16oz urinal saves 88% more water.

The sign should have said that the 16oz urinal USES 88% LESS water than the gallon urinal.
    +10,000!

Now what gets me, when I was on Phoenix for a class a few weeks ago... I'm in the middle of a fucking desert, and I did not see one single no-flush urinal.
We've got them all over the place here in SoCal... to the point that, between flushless and self-flushing, I find myself occasionally forgetting to flush.

    No thanks.

Wife does that from time to time and the bowls end up looking rank.

I'm with you on this one.

Water conservation, at least in my area, really isn't something we hear much about...I'm guessing it' pretty geographic. It's cheap and there's plenty of it. I live in a pretty remote spot but, still have water provided by a co-op. The bill is so cheap, I pay it once a year because it's cheaper than using 12 stamps, 12 checks & 12 envelopes (they don't do autopay, take payment on line or by phone). Otherwise, getting 1.25% in my checking account, it'd cost $$$...

Just out of interest, anyone pay attention to how much water they use per month per person in the household?

    Pretty sure you're correct...

Two of us, between 200 and 300cf per month total.

My water bill is $80. If I shut the service entrance off and did not use any water, my bill would be $75.

So that's something like 1,500 to 2,250 a month for the two of you. AND the base bill is $75 a month. I'd shit a brick if mine was that high. I think mine is something like $12 a month if you use less than 2,500 gallons. If you use none, then there's no charge. I actually did this last year will I took vacation and 3 months of FMLA. Living alone (much of the time) I use a little less then 2,500 gallons a month.

The base $75 includes sewer and waste.
It also includes Water Availability, Recycling Availability, and a bunch of other little $5-$10 charges and fees.
My natural gas bill is generally under $20. We have gas cooking and water heater. Electric dryer. The furnace is gas... the whole 6 weeks a year that we use it.
So our winter gas bill might get up to $30.

You got me on the gas bill. No natural gas available due to my location so, I'm on L.P. Still reasonable due to out typical mild winters. L.P. runs me about $900 a year with gas cooking, water heater, furnace and dryer. Electric is also pretty decent (compared to where I've lived in the past) winter months is $35 to $40 during the hottest summer months it's $115.

Honestly, I've got no idea how much water I use in a month. I have a well an a septic system. The well's never gone dry, (hasn't even come close), and the septic has never overflowed. I figure that's good enough.

On the other hand, I water my garden with a pair of 275 gallon bulk tanks linked to the gutters on my roof. Saves me power from not running the well pump, and I guess it'll be handy if we ever have a seriously dry summer. :notsure:

    This.

I just finally replaced my old POS (no pun intended) toilet. Thing couldn't even flush urine. 4 gallons a flush.

Installed a Toto Drake (the 1.6 gpf model) and the thing is amazing.

Takes down my deer legs no problem.

Where I work, all the plumbing and bathroom hardware is relatively new. The toilets have a super powerful jet flush which must be using a lot of water, but they *never* get rid of all the poops. New hardware using more water/resources, but still can't get this simple job done right? Just stupid.

    And...

My roommate just moved out. He was a good roommate from the perspective of being quiet, clean, and paying rent. He was a horrible roommate from the perspective of utility bills and water usage. He would leave lights on all over the g0d**dam house, super bright everywhere like the surface of the sun. He had a large exterior window in his room, but during the day he would draw the curtains and then turn on every lamp and light in his room "so he could read better." I was constantly asking him if he's using a light (kitchen, bathroom, garage, etc) before I turned it off for him, then reminded him that we both pay the utility bill and please be aware of your electricity usage. For f*cksake really dude? He was 32 years old and I felt like a babysitter.
Then he would take 20-minute showers, often more than one per day. Then his wife would use the restroom and spend even longer. Neither of them had any awareness or any concept or concern about limited resources, no matter how many times I explained our current drought situation in CA. Maybe in their culture cleanliness equals Godliness, but I'm certain that taking a long shower does not make you a better person or improve your character.

I have low flow shower heads/faucets and fluorescent bulbs in everything so it doesn't really matter how long showers are or how long lights are on. My water bill has never exceeded the minimum and my electric bill is never over $60 per month be it just me or when I had two roommates (over the past 5 years).

My point is - You should work on getting your house more efficient if you're that worried about people who could give two shits. Make them conform.
