    I'm a tile contractor.

Here's my photobucket album that has some of my jobs.

Work has been dead in this economy. Not a lot of high end bathroom/kitchen remodels going on, which is kind of my target market.

Im going into my fourth year of ME at Cal Poly Pomona. I interned as a project manager with Clark Construction for a year and a half. We did mostly $100 million dollar and up commercial stuff. That company also did LA Live. The entertainment place next door to the staples center here in socal.

We are working on a job here in Dallas that is going to be very similar to LA Live. LA Live is the model that they are building to, at least. Should be a cool project if we can get it in budget.

In fact, that is what I am working on right now (when I'm not browsing teh forums). My arms are resting on the plans. Sucks working through the weekend.

Probably a lot less if I didn't screw around during the week. :D

Honestly, there might be 3 or 4 times a year that I have to come in on a weekend, if even if I was efficient with my time.

The job that I am working on now is a short trigger, we were awarded it and have 30 days to present the GMP number on it. That is about 3 weeks faster than we typically see work. There is a 5500 seat theater (stage, not movie) a 1200 car parking garage and 9 seperate restaurants on a 17 acre site. It is a lot of work to cram in, and even if I was diligent during the week, there'd be no way for me to not have to work some this weekend.

Its the price I pay for a rewarding experience. :( It isn't all bad though. I do enjoy my job, I just don't remain focused all of the time.

The guys in the field give me crap because they think I work an 8-5 job, but I can assure you it isn't. I typically get here around 6:45 and go home around 6. When it is slow, I can go home when ever I want, sometimes I head out to play golf at 3 (like I did Friday).

If you want to know about my construction job, just ask away. I love my job, but I know it isn't for everyone. I don't think my g/f understands why I don't mind working the hours I do.

Centex doesn't build houses anymore. They were bought by Pultie.

We (Centex Construction) never built houses. We were a division of Centex Homes, but Centex Construction was (and now as Balfour Beatty Construction) are a large commercial contruction GC. Azure tower, One Arts Plaza, Childern's Medical center, places that like, are what we build. At least that is what the scope of work for the division I work.

But, as for the SOG for houses, I don't really understand why they are so common here in Dallas other than they are much much cheaper to build. The soils here are rediculously expansive and all heavy construction here has piers. Everyone I know that has an older SOG house has some foundation issues.

Cheaper than 10' of select fill, moisture conditioning or water injection; you are right.
