    Was wondering if anyone knows what oil (brand) they put in a new vehicle and what everyone here recommends for the 1st oil change. Old school says the engine break in should occur within the first 100 to 250 miles and you should change the oil after that. (I'm old enough to remember old school! :() What have you all done with your new trucks? It's been forever since I've bought new, and I'm thinking that things have changed and there isn't as much "break in" required. Also, thoughts on switching to synthetic on first oil change?

    Technically you dont have to change the first oil till 5k miles.

    Myself personally changed it out at 2500mi, then had the dealer do it at 5k miles when it was in for some other stuff... But i plan on doing it myself from now on (almost at 10k) Ever 4.5-5k miles with a new filter.

    Ebay has 10 of em with drain bolt gaskets for 45 bucks... thats oem quality filters for 4.50 a piece... cant beat that

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-TOY...Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ed1613149&vxp=mtr

    As far as oil thats your choice, the v6 only needs 5w-30 standard dino oil.

    I bought my truck in January. It has 4400 miles and I have not changed the oil. When I do, I will be using Mobil 1 0W-30 and sending a sample of the first drain to Blackstone so they have a baseline.

    I recommend reading this: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/

    Then making a decision based on your newly acquired knowledge.

    Its all a personal choice, but I changed the oil on my new '14 TRD(V6) at 500 miles, and put in some 5w-30 synthetic. What I can say, is that the old oil didn't look all that great coming out, so I'm glad I changed it...

    I put Royal Purple 5w30 in my 2013 TSS 4.0 V6 and i've been changing my oil since i've had the truck because I just don't like anybody fooling with my truck when i'm not around. So that is the reason i've been doing it because I know what kind of oil and how much is going in my truck.

    I recommend you follow your owners manual for the first 30,000 then make a decision on oil, intervals etc depending on if you have a warranty.

    4.0 = 5w30 - Synthetic is a great idea but not required.
    2.7 = 0w20 - Synthetic mandatory.
    Older 2.7 = 5w20 or 0w20... Synthetic recommended but not mandatory, though I have never seen a conventional 5w20 (not that I've looked for it, but 0w## is always synthetic).

    The Toyota factory oil is most likely Mobil-1, or blended using M1 base stock.

    Break-in is the first 1000 miles, according to the owner's manual.

    Not to hijack your thread. But I recently purchased a 14 tacoma. And I have been wondering about this question too. Dealer said bring it back at 8k miles for first oil change?? Seems like a lot of miles for the first oil change? My thoughts were maybe technology in the engines is better and they do not have all the break in period "trash" in the oil now? Thinking of doing it myself around 4k just for piece of mind.

    Dealer is wrong.

    Show them in your owners manual.

    Also show them this:

    http://rav4world.com/pdf/T-TT-0005-10.pdf

    Tacoma is not yet approved for 10,000 mile oil changes on either engine. Both 2.7 and 4.0 require 5k intervals.

    If you are using non -synthetic 5w 30 you should change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles. If you are using synthetic oil, you should change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles. Oil condition is the life of the engine.

    The engines are mostly broken in from the factory hence the 5,000 mile first change. I had mine changed at 5k and will follow factory spec until the warranty is up.

    Then I will switch to full synthetic and run an oil analysis on it after 5k miles so hard data and science tells me what's really going on with my oil instead of guessing and assumption.

    http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ ($25 for an analysis and they will give you mileage recommendations based on amounts of additives left in oil that you send in)

    Toyota factory oil is manufactured by EXXON/MOBIL. I changed the oil in my 2009 four cylinder at 2,000 miles and I repeat every 3,000. I use 5w30 synthetic now at 21,000 miles. No oil consumption. The recommended interval is 5,000 miles, but I don't wait that long and I have NO FAITH in the dealerships to do ANYTHING but warranty and recall work.

    So I'm reading that correctly... '11-14 Tacomas should run 0W-20?
