Yeah he goes through a lot of tailgates. Between them bending loading stuff, and him backing into things with it down, he's better off not even having one lol

Well another repeat customer showed up last night. JuanitoBunito brought out a set of slider/steps he wanted converted to frame mount. We made quick work of it! Added some 2x2x3/16" legs, and had them on the frame in no time! They turned out great!

Well Brian's coming back this weekend to have his Avid offroad sliders converted from Bolt-On to weld on. For those not aware, Avid's "bolt-on" sliders design:

"They are designed more for the people that like the looks of sliders but don't need the super strength of weld ons...They simply bolt into the factory running board mounts."

This obviously would not do for his future truck plans so the time has come.

I started roughing out the legs this evening in prep for him to come. Left the legs long, then I will notch them to length for the exact positioning of his sliders. Frame plates and gussets are 1/4" thick. :D

Of course as luck would have it, my welder croaked halfway through tacking them together :( Looks like I am going to have to replace a thermistor on the control panel for the wire feed motor.

    But got this done:

Finally got a chance to make some progress on this. Passenger side "wing" is near complete, just a few more plates to add. This is the side that will get the spindle for the swingout. Gives you an idea of how it will look. Hoping to finish tacking this up Saturday morning and weld it out Sunday afternoon.

With Brian taken care of it was time to get back on Jeremy's rear bumper. With a meet coming up next weekend, I had to get this thing in usuable condition. It will be complete sans swingout tire carrier, which will come later. The spindle will mount on the passenger side top of the main 4x4 tube.

    Finished tacking it up

    20140517_200323_zpsf06d12fe_897b69b276bd279d26d64648d81085419bc43b72.jpg

Then removed it to weld it up, added receiver as well

Paint is drying now, and mounting it up today after work!

Not on this one. I got a remnant length of 4x3 that worked out perfectly. I did use the swag brake for Brian's (geekhouse) diff armor a few posts up though. Gotta love actually using the tools that are normally just sitting around :D

I contemplated using it for the "wings" on the bumper but they are roughly 30" long and that's too long for the swag brake.

gotcha. it's holding up well so far, and working as planned?

As my move to Maryland (and a garage) nears, i'm planning more and more what tools to get sooner than later. the swag brake is high on the list, pending positive reviews from trusted sources. i don't like trusting half the DBs on pirate

Works great. My only recommendation would be to skip the heavy duty and just get the regular one. I have never needed to bend 5/8" lol.

The heavy duty just has a wider bottom die, and tends to bend things at a larger radius than the regular one would. Still happy with it, for the handful of times I have used it.

It would have come in handy making a lot of the brackets when I did the SAS, but I didn't even have the press then anyway.

And I am one of the pirate DB's :D
