Clay Bar Question

Will claying take out water spots? I tryed some Zaino swirl remover and polish and it didn't get them all out.

 

sometimes.....it will work on water spots depending on how bad they are.

 

Try Real Clay Bar... NOT a spray on type Clay bar that just sprays on and wipe... You need the CLAY BAR...Some folks use this spray clay Bar treatment but there is no replacement for that little clay bar piece rubbing the surface while you spray!
There is a difference.
IF you dont get results with the Clay Bar, take it to a professional Detailer with real equipment.

 

while i agree with this statement......clay magic/mothers/meguiars come with real clay for the paint........only the turtle wax ice clay kit doesnt.

 

I detailed my truck today. I washed it, claybared it with Zaino #18 Clay Bar with Meguires Spray Detailer, then I used Meguires step 1 paint cleaner, meguires step 2 paint cleaner, then meguires gold class paste wax. damn did it look good when I was done. also cleaned up all of the chrome trim with mother's mag and wheel polish.. yummy

 

OK, I'm going to try the clay bar. I don't really know of a detail shop I trust. I've seen a lot of vehicles after a "professional detail" and there are swirl marks all over the thing!

 

i used meguiars colorx...it took a lot of the water spots off my bsp tacoma

 

I have bad water spots on the roof on an Impulse Red and it makes me . I've tried clay bar and cleaner wax and they don't come out. I'm going to try rubbing compound by hand then on a buffer if needed, but very carefully when the weather cools down.

 

It didn't work for me. My water spots were bad. I even tried vinagar. The only thing that worked was the 3M Micro Polish. But be careful with it.

 

Water spots are created from the deposits in the water that when dried, etch the paint. Usually, this will come from spinklers, water hoses etc in areas where people live that have hard water. Rain doesn't leave water spots, unless the rain water is acidic. If you do get water spots from washing your truck, pick up some Optimum No-Rinse and add that your wash bucket. It will minimize the spots. You could also add a water softner to your hose spigot, but that is kinda pricey.

To remove them, you are have to remove some of the clear coat in order to level the etching and remove the spot. This is done with a polish. Depending on how deep the etching is will dictate how tough of a polish you will need.

I would try some Meguiars Ultimate Compound for really bad spots and ScratchX 2.0 for mild ones. These are OTC products and can be found anywhere. It is going to require some elbow grease because you a basically 'sanding' the clear with the polish. A machine will work far better, and I recommend one for anyone with dark colored paint who likes to keep the paint looking mint. PC

If you are looking for something else no OTC, I like Meguiar's M105 followed by M205 and Adam's Polishes' Swirl and Haze remover followed by his Fine Machine Polish.

M105 has more cut the the SHR. The 205 and FMP are pretty close.

Tip, have a spray bottle of 50/50 90%+ alcohol and DISTILLED water. Give the area you just polished a spray and wipe down with a microfiber towel. Then wax. the 50/50 mix removes any old polish residue that you couldn't get off.

I had to get my hood painted because of water spots!!!! They wouldn't even come out sanding with 3000 wet/dry.

 

You must have left the spots for awhile. Also, 3000 really isn't that strong. I mean, yes you will remove clear, but I would have tried 2500 or 2000 if you had access to a paint thickness gauge. Deep etching is very difficult to get fixed if it goes deep enough because you have to remove too much clear to level the spot.

Hard water is NOT your friend. I actually keep a 4oz bottle of a waterless car wash in my truck along with a MF towel. If I see spots or bird crap, it comes off that second. Detail spray would work just as well.
