Hey all, my tires were shot so I got some new ones installed today. The tech told me there is a noise coming from my front end, he guessed wheel bearings. There has been noise for a while that I had attributed to the old tires. It got worse as I accelerated to about 65, but then was gone or quieter at 70. It had a couple of sweet spots where it would die down or go away. And a couple of RPM ranges where it was louder. I havent driven it over 55 since getting the tires (because I am scared now).

Does this sound like a symptom of wheel bearings? Would you suggest I let the shop tear apart the front end and investigate, I know nothing about mechanicals.

Based on your symptoms, you may very well will be needing new wheel bearings. The cheapest way, is to order them online and then have a local shop with a press install them on your hubs. Don't forget to include the rubber seals with your order. I think I paid $60 bucks to have them pressed in the hub, and like $60 bucks for the each bearing.

Awesome, thanks! Is this doable with a floor jack and jack stands, without a lift? I watched a video and it looked like it is?

To remove and install the hubs, yes.

You should be fine doing them yourself, just be sure to rent or borrow a good torque wrench for the axle nut.... 35mm socket also.

Just to let folks know, I replaced both front hubs (with bearings) and everything is running smooth and quiet now :)
