Do any of you guys know if there is a regulation on the size of caliber you can use for deer hunting. I have a tikka 22-250 and I've read of guys using it for deer. I know it's a small caliber but taking with the bigger grain bullets that I've shot this gun still leaves a big exit wound on a coyote or fox. I've tried researching it through game an fish but can't find it saying Amy kind of restrictions on caliber size.

Well it is bigger than a .22 definitely does way more damage than a standard .22 I only ask cause I am new to hunting and I really want to go deer hunting this year we or the first time.

There might not be a specific reg, but probably a more general rule about ethical takes, I don't know. My suggestion is don't do it, it might kill a deer... an hour later where you'll never find it. Maybe whitetail only if you're an expert shot. Right tool for the job my friend.

This. Use the right rifle that will effectively drop your target. Not bashing. I understand your reasoning. But I've just seen the above scenario happen a few times.. not to mention the morality of it. Good hunting!

That's the only reason why I haven't done it. Idk if it would be effective enough but I feel like it would be. I guess I just have to get another rifle. Damn.. haha

I believe it's legal (don't quote me) and would work, but probably not preferable. It's like a faster 5.56. if it came down to it, you're probably good as long as you're not trying to shoot past 200 yards, but not ideal. if you do decide on it, use a heavy grain bullet. I've shot my fair share of deer with a 00 buck shotgun shells and only hit it with one or two pellets to take them down.

A great excuse for... MORE GUNS! ;)

I think a 22-250 is a great round, perfect for varmint and javelina. I have a .222 which is kind of oddball these days, but it's fast and effective for a small bullet... and pretty similar to a 22-250 I think.

Yeah I have it sighted in at 200 yards but probably wouldn't try to take a deer down at that range. From what I have read and talked to some other guys about is that it still has a big impact because the bullet is flying so fast. The biggest grain I can get is a 64 grain. I mean my grouping at 200 yards is less than an inch apart.

you should be good to go then, If you can get your hands on a .30 cal or something near that you'll better off, but I wouldn't spend hundreds of dollars just to get one for hunting once or twice. I don't see how anyone can really question the morality of the 22-250 but is okay with bow hunting.

AZ has some BIG muleys and with a 22-250 you're limiting yourself to perfect shots on smaller targets... if you care. I take a more conservative approach and tend to over kill than under kill. To each their own.

Bow and gun are apples and oranges, you can be slim shady in both cases or do it right in both cases.

i agree with you for overkill not underkill, I hunt with my .308 not .223. it doesn't seem like he's a big hunter yet, so I'd say use something that's "okay" before he invests in something "awesome" for something he may not enjoy. but as you said, to each their own.

Well I know I like guns. I always have so It's not like I don't want to go shooting ever. I guess my biggest thing that I am trying to learn is how to scout the area and learn where you can hunt and where you can't. I'm not a native to AZ nor have I really been taught how to hunt. Granted I do understand the concept. Just trying to figure it all out is what's hard.

AZ can be a pretty tough place to hunt, unless you're lucky and have some sort of honeyspot. I hunt all the time and still struggle  Good luck to you, I have found experience to be the best teacher... get out and go!

Yeah I've heard that before. I have a good friend that's been hunting AZ for a long time but he just moved to Idaho so now I'm back at square one. All though he did tell me he would show me some stuff when he comes back down to visit.
