In this case, it would be better to set manual focus. The way to do that is pick a spot and pre-focus on that place (use auto focus or live view if you want)-then set to manual focus.

The other thing you can do is use the back focus button. It improves things by keeping the focus motors running and it assumes you have something to focus on. I'd just go the manual route.

We were sitting around the fire pit in my sister's backyard, so I set up the Nero and let it go. I must have bumped it when I hit the start button the second time though. There is/was a gap in the trails, right in the middle:eek:. I filled in most of them, but not all.

I damned near missed that shot of the Big Boy.

I set up the tripod, aimed at the tracks, connected the remote release, adjusted the polarizer, did a test shot.

Did test shots on EVERY train that came through.

    Perfect.

Big Boy coming around the corner, I start to capture video on the Galaxy while clicking the remote shutter... except I'm not hearing anything.
Quick look at Live View and the focus is searching!

GAHHH!!!!! It happened to focus at catch in a nearly perfect position... I would have preferred a couple of seconds later to get the Tacoma out of the shot and more of the side of the Big Boy.

Ripped the camera out of the quick release and continued tracking the loco... 4 more attempts didn't focus, ended up getting ONE additional shutter release, but only got the tender and the cab of the Big Boy.

This was with the Nikon 18-140 lens... not the Tamron.
Only thing I can figure is the CP fucked with it, but it worked perfectly on every test shot with trains moving faster.

Pretty sure it was set on matrix.

Not 100% sure, and whatever it was, I played around a bit after getting to Phoenix.

Matrix metering? Or multiple focus points?

Sometimes multiple focus points doesn't yield the result you want when there are multiple "targets".

I agree with the suggestion that darker subjects, like a black train, are often difficult to focus on because of the lack of contrast. That could be made more difficult by the filter.

basically what i had to do....found a point where i thought they would do the most tricks and focused around that area...

but the area was 150ft (ish) long, 50ish wide....so i was SOL really....

positioning would have been my best bet....tried to get in on the side, but really the open ends would have yielded the best product...

    live and learn

You guys use the focus distance limit switches? I find them really useful when I know I am going to be shooting at a given distance. I find it really helps with long glass in intial focus acquisition and if you loose focus on the subject the lens doesn't have to hunt as far to acquire focus again. And like mentioned above try the back button focus. If your focus point falls off your subject or it goes behind a obstacle you can release the back button, keep shooting with shutter button pressed and them pick back up the subect when you are back on it. I have to agree there are some tamrons that are not that fast when it comes to aquiring focus or tracking. I was hoping the 150-600 was a little better in this regard but can't complain too much for a lens that cost just over a grand.

I use the focus limit switches all the time. Definitely a win for objects that are right around the lens's minimum focus distance.

Haha thanks. Still upset I didn't make it. Maybe we can set up a weekend meet your way so you don't have to drive all the way over here again.
