Is there any reason that I couldn't/shouldn't cut the Exhaust right behind the Axle?

Bilstein 5100 Series Struts & Shocks (Struts set 2.25", Stock Coil-overs). 1" Rear Leaf Spring Blocks. Throttle Body Spacer. K&N, High Flow-Air Filter. Toyota, OEM, TRD, Cat Back Exhaust (tail pipe cut off, behind muffler, installed 3"OD X 5"L X 45 deg, turn down, dumped prior to axle). Toyota, OEM, Running Boards. Bora, 1" hub-centric wheel spacers. Mud flaps & emblems removed. Satoshi grille (by Brian Roadruck).
Installed a TRD, catback exhaust, on my 2011, TRD, Off/Road, with 1025 miles. Prior to installing, cut the 2-1/2''OD, tail pipe off, 3-1/4'', behind the muffler, with a die grinder. Filed the cut edge down. Took the exhaust, to a local muffler shop. They took a 2-1/2''OD, exhaust pipe, measured out 4'', made 45 deg bend. From the center of the 45 deg, measured, 3-1/8'' & cut off. The end, sliding over the 3-1/4''L cut, was flared to 2-9/16''ID. Using the die grinder, cut 2 parallel slots (1''L X 1/8''W), 180 deg, offsetting. Slide the turn down on, angled it 1/2 way between the ground & axle housing. Installed a clamp (the 2 slots allowed for a snug fit). Nothing is noticeable, unless you lay on your stomach & look upwards. Clean set-up. No highway drone, no noticeable sound increase, unless you get down on the gas & that is not that loud. Has a good overall sound.

    Just a quick update.....

I'm still alive and no issues with the exhaust, rust, etc.... My daughter gets a little sleepy while riding in the back seat but that's not necessarily a bad thing :D

Do the mod... It looks cool!

About 2-minutes with a hacksaw (new blade). I still need to file and sand it for safety. :D I like the new sound! That was unexpected.

one of the easiest cheapest off-road mods you can do.

I ran my old 92 like that for a long time.

In Texas, this is how the book reads:

20.15.2.j - Inspect for and reject if: The tailpipe fails to discharge exhaust from the rear or sides or top of the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

NOTE: On pickups not equipped with a camper or hard shell cover, holes or leaks in the tailpipe extending beyond the passenger compartment will not be cause for rejection.

The key words being: passenger compartment. The truck bed is not the passenger compartment. As long as you have a muffler you're pretty much good to go as soon as you get past the cab

Damn...... way to revive a old thread:)

That truck is long gone and I'm gonna put a TRD exhaust on this one so I suppose that would be a no.

It has more drone on take off. I did not expect the sound to change from only removing 18" of pipe, but there it is...

I never noticed any difference in sound in the old truck. Just that it wasn't sticking out of the side.

I thought of doing it to this one but then I heard a TRD exhaust the other day and liked the sound. I'll eventually get around to that with this one.
