Already been posted multiple times that the age of Granny is an estimation extrapolated by her size and age of her offspring , and the fact that wild orca stop having calves at approx 40 years old , plus observational and photographic accounts from earlier

The researchers figured out that Ruffles was her calf, and they observed that Ruffles’ physique looked to be that of a fully grown whale—i.e., he was at least 20 years old—at the time of his 1971 photo.

The researchers also deduced that Ruffles was Granny’s final calf. Herein lay a clue as to Granny’s age. Female killer whales reproduce up until they are 40 years old. So if Ruffles was 20 years old or older in 1971, then his birth was in 1951 or thereabouts. As such, Granny could have been born as far back as 1911.

 

How could you be more accurate than an estimate that utilizes all the observational accounts and research at your disposal ?

She could be older , she could be younger , it's an estimate based on scientific study of J and L pod , the southern resident orcas
