The app works great for setting up the shot and the camera so it's still useful. Just better to recognize that and use the remote for the real work :D

OK Gopro folks...I'm going white water rafting in August

I think the trip is for a half day but I'm not sure because I didn't book the trip

I have a Hero 3+, the stock battery, and 2 wasabi power batteries

Planning on bringing a chest rig to go over the life jacket unless ya'll can suggest a better mount? I don't wanna count on being able to put a mount on a helmet since they're rented helmets

How big of a memory card should I buy? and can ya'll suggest another mount solution?

The chest mount may not work that well if you're wearing a life jacket. I would try it out before the trip. The head strap mount may be able to go over the helmet.

I would consider using a sticky mount and just ripping it off after the trip.

The 3+ on a good day will eat through the battery in about an hour if you run it continuously so you may want to take a few more with you, or set the camera to take singles shots instead of video.

If you're taking video a 32gb card will hold a little over an hours worth of video so plan on taking several.

You'll also want the backdoor with the float in it.

Also check out Cam-do.com for the battery eliminator, external battery packs, timers, memory card expansion packs, etc.

    Have fun on your trip.

I bet one of the headstrap mounts would work out good. My friends and I would strap it over our longboarding helmets and it seemed to work pretty good.

Here's one of my shorter GoPro vids from a while back. I miss having it and i'm definitely gonna get a new one this summer.

When I went white water rafting I used the head strap mount over the helmet and used a few zip ties thru the holes on top of the helmet just to be safe.

    Thanks!

That was just a test video I made before our trip to Colorado to see how stable the camera would be mounted to the bed.

The camera was actually attached to the mount on the front of the bed in this picture. There is another mount in the same spot on the other side of the truck also.

    20140430_192705_zps40d037c1_3c9e3f4c35647fd548cfc6727cbd2296e81eb9b9.jpg

The rack is a Yakima Bed Rock Rack system with 66" cross bars and a Yakima Load Warrior Basket. Total for the entire rack system was a little over $500 and can be removed within 2 mins and transferred between any truck out there.

SMKYTXN and others have very good suggestions.

This is my "personal" preference. I don't use the Chesty mount because I "personally" like a POV video or I'll use a pole for a hard to reach shot (admittedly not useful in your situation). I would suggest like others and mount it to the helmet then zip tie it to the helmet also. GoPro mounts are cheap. I've probably got 20 sitting in a bag right now.

I've got a mount stuck, zipptied, tethered and use a "floaty" back door to my swiftwater helmet at work. I have hit branches, rocks, floating debris, pretty much anything you can think of and it has never come lose. It might get knocked out of position but never even came close to being knocked off.

Batteries: I have 3 batteries also (Stock GoPro and 2 wasabi). Depending on the settings you use determine battery life.

I run a stealth case for my cameras so no lights are flashing so the only way I have to know what they are doing is from the WiFi remote while in the truck.

You "shouldn't" need to run your camera from a remote so that will save your battery life dramatically. WiFi with the camera running burns through battery time by almost 1/3. I leave mine set at 1080P W 60FPS and never change those settings for video recording. If I don't use the remote I can get close to 2 hrs out of a battery. With the remote that drops off to a little over an hour or so.

Memory card: I use 2 Class 10 SanDisk 64GB and they will each hold around 4 hrs of video give or take. Anything less than a class 10 and you run the risk of video dropping out or jittery. So far I've never run into that with these cards. They are relatively expensive but... you only get one chance to get the shot so it's worth it to me.

Those are just some of "my" recommendations. Others use different settings and mounts and all are valid.

I don't plan on bringing the wifi remote so that'll be turned off...I figure I'm probably good with battery life as long as I get a chance to change it at some point. ..

My main concern was of course mount solutions. ..I think the head mount plus zip ties is the ticket...and good to know how much video time fits on a 64gb card...I'll pick up a couple before the trip

One thing I forgot to mention and you probably already know. The GoPro splits up the video (depending on recording mode) at around the 17 min mark (1080P 60FPS) or a little over 3GB of data per video. That's not a issue since you just splice them together using the GoPro video software or whatever software you use to create your videos.

Dont know if my pm was any help but I used my suction cup mount on the paddle boat the most. It wasnt perfect but it stuck fairly well I just made sure it was ALWAYS tethered for the few times it did fall off. Otherwise on a helmet was my next favorite becaude it gives a good view of everything that is going on
