in my 6 years working union. im usually working around 8-10 months of the year and still making more than the non union full timers. and my benefits are still going while off work. The union presence is growing though and it looks like steady work for the up coming years!

When you guys start negotiations how far ahead of the current contract expiring do you start talks? Reason I ask, ours ends 6/30 and we start tomorrow.

Ours is up at the end of the year. They started unofficial talk in February. Pretty much a pissing contest for the next few months. For us they don't get serious till nov/dec. Last contract we worked around 3 weeks honoring our old contract while they ironed out the details.

3 weeks, I'd love that. Last one was 14 months after the previous expired

I agree. I am no fan of them. Workers should be paid for quality of work performed not time served..
    Sorry union guys...

Doesn't bother me one bit. I put in my hours and work hard for everyone of them. :)

The sad thing is not all members are like you. Others get the same pay but are worthless. It is just how it goes...

Thats what makes me wonder, if you work hard and put in the hours, why be in a union?

I have foremen in my company with that mentality and we recently started getting rid of them.

I'm speaking for IBEW 143. Pay, benefits, pension, annuity, safer work environments, OT over 8 hours, OT on Saturdays, double time on Sundays, and the contractor has a harder time shitting on you.

Everyone has those workers that are worthless. In our case yes, we all get paid the same, but the contractor simply lays them off and hires new guys. Part of the deal in our contract is that the contractor can lay anyone off for any reason. So if your useless, see ya.
