Smoke on Startup/Oil in Air Filter

Good morning all,

So I'm not the most mechanically inclined as I've admitted before but I believe this might be a gasket problem?

A month or two ago I noticed a puddle of oil underneath my truck (which) I made a thread about and took it into the shop. They told me that my oil filter was completely loose and that it had been the issue, which was replaced. They also told me that my PCV valve was bad which had been causing oil to plug up my air filter (sound like BS?). I had been out of country and my roommate had taken my truck to Jiffy Lube while I was gone so I can completely believe the story about the oil filter being loose.

Fast forward to present and my Taco has started smoking like a fiend when it first starts up, a cloud of white/bluish smoke (oil burning?) and then stops a few seconds later. It only does this on startup if it has been parked overnight/longer duration.

I opened my filter box again and see that oil is continuing to leak into the air filter (which is less than a month old and I am seeing quarter/half dollar sized oil puddles near my front passenger wheel after it has been parked. I am again going out of area again shortly and plan on taking her back into the shop. Ideas on what I'm looking at?

 

If the PCV system is working properly, you have a blowby problem. Combustion gasses are getting past the piston rings, and is pressurizing the crankcase. Oil is getting forced throught the PCV system into the intake.
A leakdown test will confirm/reveal the severity of the blowby.

 

I had this problem awhile back. i replaced my valve cover gaskets and my PCV valve with an OEM Toyota one (Don't get the cheap-o generics, OEM is like $2 more. And don't forget the 'half moons' when doing the VC Gaskets)

I no longer have this problem.

I hope it works out for you like it did for me. You could start by making sure your VC bolts aren't backing out as they tend to come loose. Don't go cranking on them as they just need to be snug.

 

You said they told you the PCV valve needed replaced. A bad valve can lead to oil in the air box. Did you have it replaced?

 

X2 on the leak down test. Don't randomly throw parts at it til you know what the problem is.

 

I did. It was only 15 bucks. Sounds like a leak down test then. What is the worst case scenario here? Cracked head?

 

I doubt it's a cracked head. You'd have other symptoms as well. You probably have excessive blowby, which is pushing your seals out, causing a leak.
The leakdown test will reveal what, and where the problem is.
You'll need an air compressor and the tool to get the test done.

 

So an update.

Took it to the stealership before I flew out of town and had them take a look at it. They took off the valve cover and said everything appeared to be fine, that there was just sludge. So I took it home and there was no more oil leak or smoke. Fast forward about a week and a half and it has started smoking like a bandit on startup again.

Everything else seems to be ok. It idles and accelerates fine, starts ok, etc. Really it's just embarassing when I go to start it up. Maybe hit it with some Sea Foam?
