'14 DCSB OffRoad - stock suspension questions

Hey guys,
So far my truck is bone stock; and I don't plan to do much to it at all. When I need new tires, I'll probably upgrade to 265/75/16 BFG ATs.

My question is, will the rear sag way down with about 500lbs in the bed, on stock suspension? I've read about "TSB this, TSB that" "AAL" for models as recent as 2013, but how good are the leafs in a '14? Any different than the '13?

Looking at my truck, there are 3 leafs, and a shorter one on the bottom (is that the overload?).

I go on one big elk hunting trip a year (6hr drive across Colorado), and I haul tents, stove, firewood, water, ice, etc... (gear for 2 people, 4 days). Other than that, I do haul 2 dirt bikes from time to time (about 250 lbs each).

Does anyone find their 2014's stock suspension, on a TRD Off Road, lacking in conditions such as these?

As far as offroading, this truck won't see anything gnarlier than a forest service road in Colorado during winter. I like to keep the offroading to 2 wheels on my Honda 450

edit: If it came down to it, I guess I'd go for the full OME kit with 885s and Dakar leaf pack in the rear... Or could I get stronger leafs in the rear without adding any kind of lift or rake?

You are lucky... Before October 2013 if you bought a 2014 Tacoma off road it only had 2 main leafs and the overload spring... They sagged real bad!

I've seen some pretty old threads about hauling 2 dirt bikes in a short bed, and some of the pics appear to have stock trucks without much or any rear sag. I'm not sure what to make of that... Whenever I get the chance, I'll load 2 bikes and see how it is (doesn't occur often). If it can handle that, I'm good, because camping is always a travel light/minimalist affair.

Besides cost, I can't justify a lift/tires right now since it's overkill for 90% of the use this truck will see.

 

There are better leafs you can add that don't lift, then you could leave the rest stock. Would cost you around $500.

You might check out an add a leaf, they are relativly cheap and should add some extra load support.

FYI you get about a 1.5in lift with the wheelers pack.

 

I guess I'll just have to wait for an opportunity to load it down and see what happens... Nothing so far but about 200lbs of sod last weekend; no sagging at all.

I did have a friend say the AAL did nothing to his '09, so we went with the Dakar leaf pack.

Dakars are great but they will lift you a good 2.5"-3". If you go that route, you'll probably want to lift the front some or you'll have some serious rake.

 

What would happen if somebody drove to the dealership with a load in the bed, and the truck sagged to the bumpstops? If they can see that you're within the payload specs, how can they say no to fixing the issue?

 

Yea, that friend I mentioned had the full OME kit.

 

On the newer models ('12-current) probably nothing. There was a TSB for the older ones where they'd put new leafs on but they were still pretty crappy.

So a group of us went ride the trails in the foothills outside Denver this morning (Rampart Range), and the tacoma handled 2 dirt bikes in the bed beautifully. Rear only sagged a few inches and it never bottomed out. Drove up into the hills really easy; I love this truck!
