I pulled the trans pan and changed the fluid and filter. Filter has never been done. (All clean btw and magnets had very little debris 130k)

Question is, does the transmission take the full 10.5 quarts, or the 2.1 for a drain and refill? (Capacities per Haynes manual) It didn't seem like 10.5 quarts came out but when I unbolted the filter more fluid poured out. I did 2.1 and it seems a bit low so I'm thinking the 10.5. Anyone?

    Edit... It's a 3.4 auto 4x4 Might help...

2.1 and check on the dip stick after that.
10.5 is if you drain the torque converter and everything.

Ahhhh ok, thanks forgot about the converter.

Seemed a little low. I started it and put it into each gear then took it for a test spin. I had a few slips so it may still be low.

Great thread there. Very thorough, although I don't see a trans for the 3.4. Still a wealth of info though.

Looks like it will end up being more than three quarts. I'm still low and out of fluid. Going for more in the morning. Been a long day, don't know how I thought it could be 10+qt.

According to the Manual for my '96 V6 4X4 with A340f transmission, a dry fill is 10.5 US quarts and a drain and refill is 2.1 US quarts.
So why is it when i pulled my drain plug last night 166 ounces which equals 5 quarts + 6 ounces in change came out? Replaced it with an equal amount and reads correctly on the dipstick.

3.4 4wd trans is the A340F. The Prerunner has the A340E. Basically same trans, 4wd is just shorter, has different output shaft, and higher stall rate

Good question. I failed to measure the amount of fluid that came out, but it too seemed like more than 2.1, and surely not 10. I had to add more fluid, in fact it was slipping a few days after and I rechecked and added fluid. I checked this morning after driving it a while, I still had the occasional slip after a hard stop, so I rechecked the fluid after is sat overnight. It was a bit low, I added another .5-.75 qt and it seems fine now.

All said I think I added 4-5 qt after I pulled the pan for a filter change.
