Have you thought about being a wild land firefighter? I did it for a couple of summers, made some loot, and got to work in the woods. Plus, you can't spend the money you make so you come home with a nice bankroll. I built my first race car that way.

I suspect that the true boot slide mod would not cause those problems. But then, the true mod is much less easy to do so most that did it, like you, took certain shortcuts...

Which end up biting you in the ass.

What many people do is remove the original clamps, stretch the boots and put clamps back on.

 

There are three difference from what most, like Ben, did.

The correct sized (width) clamp, a new CV boot and a tab welded to the shaft that does the real work of not allowing the boot to slide back.

Without the inner tab, the clamp has to really be on very tight. So tight it eventually damages the 10, 11, 12, 13 or 14 year old rubber stock boots. Causing them to tear.
