need help?

I am installing an amp in my boat, is it okay to ground to the battery? I can put the amp close to it so my wires will be 3' or so. The boat is fiberglass with hardly any metal in it.

 

It is optimal to ground to the battery.

 

Thanks! I was afraid to try it because the instructions said to ground to a piece of metal which does not work in a all fiberglass boat.

 

Yeah. That is a problem. Unless you have a Marinette.

 

in a boat you want to ground to the battery, in a car you want your ground wire to be no longer than 2 feet to cut down on interference, this is why they ground it to metal that connects to the frame

 

It's a misconception on some forums that grounding to the battery is bad. Grounding to the battery is only bad in a lot of auto applications because the amps are usually in the trunk and the battery is usually under the hood, so the distance between the 2 is what drives people to say that. BMWs and Mercedes are nice because the batteries are usually (if not always) in the trunk.

Grounding to the battery is the best way to go.

grounding to the battery isn't necessarily bad and it will give you the best connection possible to ground but this is the reason why not to. plus it saves a fair amount on cable

In order to reduce the chance of ground loops (i.e. engine noise); make the grounding wire as short as possible to reduce the wire's resistance. Also, when using multiple components, make sure all units are grounded at the same point.

 

Yup straight to the batteries in a boat.

x2. The ONLY ground in a boat comes from the battery. Most boats are made out of either fiberglass or aluminum (pontoons). Naturally, you cannot ground to either of those.
