Sorry, to clarify.....Dip doesn't hurt the wheels at all. The factory TrD wheels have had real problems with the clear coat and paint bubbling off of them. I actually had a set replaced under warranty because they started looking really bad. It looks as though the paint was not adhering to the aluminum very well and it was not just North Eastern climates like mine that were seeing the problem it has been all over. In convo with a salesman at my local dealer the other day he said Toyota had worked it out but it remains to be seen I guess.

Not my pic but an example of how mine looked...

I checked last year and was told it would cost me about $145/wheel. I could get brand new wheels cheaper than that!! I ended up Plasti-Dipping mine and i might use real paint on em this Spring. Ended up being an $18 job rather than $400+

Love this look. Was wanting to do the same thing. Question though how did you get the fj hubcaps to secure in the wheel. It's a different system than my tacoma and for the life of me i couldn't get them to secure. When pushed on from the back they just fell right out. Thanks josh

Hi Josh glad you like it and valid question about the centre caps...The FJ system is not the same as the Tacoma and they don't fit just right. I solved the problem by simply putting a dab of silicon on each tab and letting the truck sit all night so the silicon sets up. When it comes time to have new tires installed or balanced you just pry them off, clean off the old silicon, reapply and you're all set. Mine have stayed on for a number of years with no problems.

with my TRD center caps I just sanded them down on a table saw until it fit. Took off maybe less than half an inch off I think. they snap on pretty easy once you do that.

I just had the 4Runner Limited wheels I bought powdercoated. $250 (a friend of mine) and went with a gunmetal finish.

they are a little lighter in person, especially when the sun hits them.

Those wheels look great! Silly question: do paint shops do powder coating, or some other place?

A friend of mine has a powder coating business and does a lot of wheels. The best way by far is to have them chemically stripped then PC'ed. He told me $75 per wheel, stripped and coated.

And that ^^^ gun metal looks great. I think that would look good with the nautical blue. I may go that route when I get new tires.

Its amazing how much better blacking out the wheels on the standard wheels looks. Besides, the stock Toyota finish is terrible in the winter. I got a set of those wheels from a friend who sold his Tacoma. They went through 3-4 Indiana winters which are not even that bad for salt. They are peeling like crazy. Black looks awesome on them. Toyota should do that from the factory!
