This is primarily for regular cab 4x4's. I've been wanting a truck for awhile. I want something I can pull a small trailer with lawn equipment but would also like the 4wd since it sits up a little higher. I had a ram before but terrible mileage and no 4x4, it just wasn't for me. I did use it to haul but just want something a little more forgiving. I hated getting stuck in the winter time, big truck but couldn't even get outta the driveway at times. Does any of you regular cab owners have any regrets from buying? The only thing I know I will miss is cruise. I commute about forty minutes to and from work.

the tacoma unless you get a 2.7L 4 banger will get about the same mileage as your ram

I presume the OP is asking the regret being the regular cab part ? or 4wd ?. I'd like to have a Tacoma 2.7L 4wd ( I'm retiring this Fall....so may be a possibility ) but am wondering if I'll really need the 4wd since the truck already has LSD?. This is a gas mileage issue in my head and the possibility of wasting $$$ on something I may engage only half a dozen times a year----if at all .I would definetly get the 4wd if I was in the construction trades or worked on a farm or similiar.

Taco will do this. You will not regret getting one for this.

If all you want is for it to 'sit up a little bit higher' you can get a Prerunner model, which is essentially a 2wd with the 4x4 stance.

If you say a ram had terrible mileage and that wasn't for you, then you're not going to love the Tacoma's mileage. You can do a search on the forums and find lots and lots (and lots) of him-hawing about mileage ranging from 13mpg up to about 21mpg. I am of the opinion that the 21mpg guys are either fibbing or driving in a manner that is, at best, annoying...and, at worst, unsafe.

That's a risk you run with any 2wd, though. What do you mean when you say 'more forgiving' ? This is a confusing statement. Do you mean gets better mileage? A Taco won't. Do you mean is smaller and easier to drive? A Taco is smaller, but just as likely to get stuck in the snow as a big truck... some might even argue more likely to get stuck, if it doesn't have a lift and some grippy tires.

I don't own a regular cab, but I can say that the Tacoma has been more fun to drive than my GMC Sierra Z71, has a more spartan interior than my Ford F-150, and is a thousand percent more reliable than my S-10/Colorado was. The aftermarket for the Tacoma is amazing, this forum is fantastic, and despite the truck's mediocre gas mileage it is shaping up to be my favorite truck I've ever owned.

Lots of Love, Hope this helps,

    -Dan

I had retired last year and traded my commuter car for a reg cab 4x4. I have engaged the 4x4 twice when I needed it in a snow storm. I was glad I had it. Mileage wasn't a concern since I would not be putting on a lot of milage (I just hit 10k). The resale value on a 4x4 is much higher than 2wd so I know I will get back the 4wd premium plus the 4wd will be easier to sell. I have been involved in home projects which this truck has served me well and the 2.7 provides me all the power I need. The perfect truck for a retiree.

    Howdy,
I just traded my Ram Hemi 4X4 for a Tacoma, four door, 4X4. Both are 2012 models. I got 16 mpg on the Ram and get around 20 mpg on the Taco. Believe it or not the Taco rides better than the Ram on the highway. I consider my trade to be the best deal that I have made in a while!!!!:D

well I got me a reg cab 4x4 5spd...only thing I regret is maybe going access cab for bucket seats lol...I dont need the extra space but I rather have buckets. for the price I couldnt go wrong, all the add ons that I woulda got I got already lol power windows door locks stuff like that

not sure if anyone else has this problem but on the stock tires going 50 and up the truck feels like its floating? idk how to explain it but I threw on some 265/75/16s and that went away fast lol

    2013 Access Cab V6 SR5
I started out with a 2012 reg cab, base model. For daily, local driving in MD it wasn't bad. I really liked it. Once I bought my house though I was forced to transfer my WV tags to MD to the tune of about $2K. I decided to spend the money and upgrade to a 2013 Access Cab V6 SR5.

The bench was ok, but anything longer than an hour and it became extremely uncomfortable. The 4 cyl was ok, but was a dog in the mountains when I went home to WV. The cab space and storage was ok, but when I had to load up for a road trip, I missed the secure, dry storage that my Access Cab now provides.

I'm not power hungry fan boy by any means but the V6 is a much more enjoyable motor and the extra space the access cab provides is nice to have.

    Hi Rick, welcome to TW.

As a former resident of Indiana, I'm interested in knowing what area you're located. I lived not too far from Spencer / Bloomington / Martinsville & worked in Indianapolis.

I've owned several Toyota trucks. In fact, I owned a 2010 2.7 single cab manual 4x4 & a 2012 4.0 Double Cab automatic 4x4 at the same time until recently. The single cab did have the fixed back bench seat which, to me, was painful. Single cabs are available with dual individual reclining seats which I'm sure would help. The cab space in the single cab is extremely limited & the milage, at around 19mpg for me, was no better than the 2012 4.0 auto. That said, both were solid trucks that required nothing other than schedule maintenance (as they should have been).

Thanks guys. I didn't expect this many replies so fast. Just shows this is a good family here. By forgiving I was meaning gas efficiency. The one I was looking at was the auto with bucket seats. I might look into bed seating if I decide to do any light trail riding or a small road trip with the kids. I want this to be a work truck/play toy lol. I'd also like to be able to customize this to my liking though. I don't need a lot. Maybe cruise, lift kit, gotta have some bright head and fog lights, and maybe something with the bed. A removal sunroof might be cool but then again I might be reaching with that one.

Yes, I have regrets! Maybe it's just my mood. Hubby is TDY again and I'm home alone with "our" stupid truck (that I agreed to buy). :(

I can barely get in and out of it and it's impossible if I have on heels or I'm wearing a dress. If it's a short dress than I can't get in or out without putting a show on for the whole world (I don't do that anymore!!!).

I can hardly see over the steering wheel and if a move the seat close enough to reach the pedals than I'm too close to the steering wheel. If I put my back up against the back of the seat than the bottom front of the seat makes my legs go to sleep.

The air conditioning is nice and I do like the radio!

My only regret is not buying a Tacoma sooner. Hands down the best vehicle I have ever owned.

Sounds like you could use some side steps on that truck. Also, did you know that the wheel telescopes a little?

You should be able to move your seat closer to the steering wheel to reach the pedals, and then at the same time telescope the wheel in towards the dash so that your not so close to the wheel.

No regrets here. Mine has primarily been for DD in DFW area. Not a whole lot of off road stuff yet, so 4wd has seen minimal use. I can tell you that it kicked butt during the big ice storm we had here in Texas.
Two things I don't like, I am 6'4 and about 280 lbs, so it is a little tight for me sometimes. I hate the JBL/Nav system....hate it!!!
I have owned several Toyota's, Supra, Camry and have never had one issue. Consider the Access Cab, it is a fine medium between the DC and Reg cab and it is always better to have extra room and not need it rather than need it and not have it. Should be able to option cruise.

Yea I agree lol. I've seen some side steps instead of rails, they did look pretty cool. Not sure who makes them but it's just like one step right under the door. This might sound wrong but being your neighbor doesn't sound too bad. Haha just kidding, I had too.

    Very funny.

I'm sure you guys are just trying to help but my hubby put these shiny step thingies on the truck that are almost as high up as the doors. I need a step to get up on the silly steps! And, once I'm standing on the steps, if I try to put my hiney back down on the seat it's below my knees. This is not a very lady-like sitting position!

When I dropped my husband off Thursday morning he was driving. The steering wheel and seat were all set for him. He's 6 feet tall. I'm 5 feet 5 when I'm wearing 4 inch heels . I pull up the seat thingie and it's like the seat has a mind of its own. It slides all the way back. Then I take off my heels so I can put my feet flat on the floor and its everything I can do to get the seat back up close. I have to go back and forth a bunch of times before I can get it in a place where I can reach the pedels!

The windows go up and down nicely. The windshield wipers work really good. The bluetooth hookup to my iPhone is nice.:)

Oh, I forgot. No, I don't know how to make the steering wheel move. If our truck has those buttons I'll bet it isn't easy!
