This cant be a good sign for my Clutch:

Was driving around today, nothing harsh... Had one burn out on a back road for shits and giggles... About 5 or so min later, I was taking a U Turn. Put it in 1st, tried to leave quick cause of on coming traffic, and nothing but a minor rev and role. It was like slow motion, I swear Put it in second since i was rollin, and still nothing, just moved forward slowly. Was like a bad dream...

So I pulled off to an empty lot, jumped out and had nothing but that burnt clutch smell. Haven't smelt that since I was pushing the Blue Devil hard up at the URE trails.

Then after a couple minutes, all was normal Good news is I have plans to upgrade to a Stage IV clutch from URD. Bad news is It aint til after my next deployment, and I need Blue Devil to hang in there

Damn, I need to baby it for the next couple months or I will be SOL.

Anyone experience this when their clutch began to go???

 

I could understand your clutch going out if you hammered on it everyday like that for 2 months straight but your truck is only an '08. How many miles are on your truck?

Yeah it's not out yet. Had the issue with the Throw out Bearing, but had the Dealership replace under warranty.

Just hoping this was a fluke, and not a repeated issue.

 

I remember teaching my wife how to drive a standard on a hill and smelling that "burnt clutch smell" coming through the windows. She would look at me and say "What am I doing wrong"?........hey, your truck is under warranty, take it in while it's all still for free!

 

Sounds or smells rather like you "glazed" your clutch. Happens when you're either half in or half out of engagement. Usually goes away after the clutch cools or after a few rounds shifting the "proper way"

 

My clutch went out on my 06.... but it was my own fault.... one long drunkin experience.... it was about a grand to fix at the dealership bc its not covered under a warrenty bc it is considered a wear item.... sounds like yours may have just got real hot or something

 

I have an 06 with 80,000 i tow a 21' nautique, i just replace the clutch with a stage IV and what a difference. if youre gonna replace the clutch make sure the release bearing and the pilot bearing are replace too.

 

I agree as well.
Had that happen to a mustang I drove recklessly. Slipping the clutch with high revs heated it up bad. Worked like it was greased until it cooled off. You've done some major wear on it for sure. May last a long time depending how worn it is. Driving like that though will kill it pretty quick. Also had a pressure plate fracture from doing the same. Big bang outta that.

 

Just a hunch...Seems to soon with only 15K miles but how's your clutch fluid? Is it dirty? If so, replace the fluid in the bowl several times to try to clear it and then change it each time you change your engine oil. Sludge builds up in the slave that eventually kills it. I have an auto in my new ride so can't speak from experience with Gen 2's but my '03 had a problem which this eventually cured.

Dealership is all about claiming operator error, and not warranty the clutch due to it being a wear & tear item. ie... Brakes

I appreciate the info guys... i do know how to shift properly. Actually use to put pretty damn sweet track times in my younger days

If I did it everyday I would admit fault. I am just looking for the tell tell signs of Kaboom. But just got back from a daily drive through the neighbor hood and all was good. I am not an advocate of racing and speeding, but when the opportunity arises, and the environment allows for a nice launch; this should not heat up the clutch so bad as to loose all function

But oh well, will be looking forward to the Stage IV..

Here is something else to think about....on the side of the trans is the clutch slave cylinder. Next to that is a steel plate that covers the hydraulic pin that pushes the clutch release arm. The seal on that piece of steel is not the greatest. If you got some kind of contaminent like water, clutch fluid(dot 3), or grease, inside that it will cause slippage problems. On my 02 Tacoma I had to replace the clutch at 20k but that's because I drove it like I stole it. My 06 was going at 80k but that's because I drive it like I stole it and I tow like 6k lbs of boat and trailer. Bottom line is that the clutch is either contaminated or it's worn out....stranger things have happened. There could have been a defect in the batch of material for the disc, however unlikey.
