Low Range - BEEP!!!!

It drives me nuts to listen to the beep beep beep when I have my rig in low range. Why did Toyota do that???

 

Its not in Low range. The beeping is telling you its not engauged.

OP-Did you read the manual before trying to engage 4LO?? You need to have the truck completely stopped (MT-Clutch to the floor AT-In neutral) then turn the knob and see what happens. A little bit of reverse or side to side wheel turns may also help.

Hrmp....that's a new one. Service sounds like the way to go...a 09 shouldn't be any trouble to get warranty coverage...I'd try the neutral thing like was suggested above tho....

 

I think so too. I'll try the other things also, but it's probably a bad switch or sensor.....

 

Definitely take it in. Are both hubs locked in I wonder?

 

You have to let it fully engage in 4Hi before you go to 4Lo. I get in a hurry sometimes and don't let thie first one fully engage before going to the second and get the annoying beep.

if you have manual transmission its best if your totally stopped, press the clutch in all the way down, while holding down the clutch then switch it in to 4 hi, then turn it again and put it in Lo, release the clutch and you should be good to go

 

Is the "4lo" light staying on solid or blinking? Not the green 4X4 light, but the yellow 4lo light.

 

Man I miss the Lever actuated transfer in my 99 taco...

Yup, me too. This 2012 it never has yet gone into 4lo the first time. I have to put the clutch in, flip the switch to 4lo from 4hi, listen to it beep and flash, then release the clutch, put the clutch back in, flip it to 4hi, then back to 4lo. And voila! Finally kicks into 4lo.

And going from 4lo back to 4hi same thing.

And from 2wd to 4hi (and back) isn't much better. I really shouldn't have to keep flipping that switch back and forth at times. I really dislike the auto xfer case, how is this an improvement?

I've never had a problem with an auto t-case. I've had them on an F-150, my Tacoma, and my patrol Colorado. The only issue with the Colorado is you have to be MOVING at 2mph or less, in neutral, before it will switch into or out of 4 Low without grinding. Not a problem with the truck either, it's how you're supposed to do it.

 

Going from RWD to 4HI is painless enough for me. Flip the switch and drive.

But 4LO is finicky. When they say stopped, they mean dead stop - not even rocking on the suspension. And the clutch to the floor means all the way to the floor. Not that half assed kinda sorta pushed in that gets the job done every other time you use it.

 

Eh, I just had to bitch, moan and lament the sure action of the manual transfer case vs. the auto xfer case's spotty action.

Are you saying you surely go into the drive position you want to first-time and every time? I haven't got that feeling from the posts I've read here.
