Train Horn

Let me start by saying im not asking for your approval,not trying to be a d*ck or anything im just tired of seeing people trash talk what other people like. I am getting a train horn for my birthday, I just wanted to see if any other first gen had one and where the horns were mounted I know where im putting the compressor,

 

Use the search. I know there are others in here with train horns. I know second gens can stuff a compressor under the bed behind the tail light. Maybe you could look there

 

I have one, i mounted the horns quite creatively. If you buy an electric compressor you will be better off. I was able to put my direct-drive compressor behind the rear seat of my double cab, ran wires off the battery to a switch and ran some air hose to a set of horns between my grill and radiator. It doesn't store any air but works well and if you don't want to put a compressor on the exterior i suggest you try and get a small direct-drive one.

Well this is what im looking at, im thinking it will sound ok, but I got a camper shell, so the compressor can go in the bed, and the horns under the truck somewhere, but where?

 

I'm a 2nd gener, but I have a dual trumpet mounted under the cab with compressor/tank mounted in the bed on the wheel well. If you mount your compressor outside of a compartment (cab/bed with shell), be sure that your compressor does have a filter.

 

First off who am I to judge.

Second, that is awesome! I just don't want to be the guy doing something stupid and have you blow that thing at me.

Here in Dallas, I find myself wishing I had one from time to time.

I have a 2012 and there are plenty of places to mount horns out of sight.

I have a WOLO model 845 Direct Drive horn mounted between the grill and the A/C condenser. It was chrome but I just painted it black this past weekend.





Here is the small direct drive compressor mounted near the driver's side headlight.



I also have a small WOLO model 619 "Big Bad Max" direct drive air horn mounted on the passenger side of the grille.





There is still room behind the grille and I am considering adding more horns I still have the 2 factory horns with the "baffles" removed. So right now I have 4 horns and it does sound like a train...just not as loud. There is room for a compressor under the bed where it meets the cab so who knows

 

Makes me think about moving my compressor now.., never though about putting it there, would be alot less air hose.

 

Thats awesome but im 99% sure it wont fit behind the grill this thing should be huge. I was thinking under the truck but i cant lose my spare tire.

 

Wish I could help you with that. Unfortunately there is a world of difference between a 2000 and a 2012. Crawl up under there and see where you can squeeze it in. You can always mount the horns separately in different spots. Maybe vertical pointing down in the engine compartment? Make sure you don't mount them so they get too much water splashing inside. Take some pics when you do find a place to mount them.

That setup is pretty inexpensive. Just remember...you get what you pay for. Check out the WOLO website. They not only post the decibel ratings of their horns but....and this is the best part....THEY HAVE SOUND BYTES of the horns !!! Once you see and HEAR their horns you might change your mind. Also some of their horn kits have individual horns that can be mounted in separate locations if size is a factor in where you can mount them.

 

I've been wanting or shall I say needing a train horn for while. But OP you have a camper shell. Just go ahead and get a big ship horn like these.

Wolo sells good complete kits, but if you can afford hornblasters, they are very good horns. I always wanted to put a Kahlenberg T-3 on my truck though, i have a hornblaster horn now with a harbor freight compressor.

 

Thanks for advice and info those have already been ordered I guess ill try them it said 30 day satisfaction gaurentee. But I'm hoping it sounds fine. If any first gens have them a short video would be appreciated
