Is There a Known Issue w/OEM Backup Cameras & Water?

Just curious because I started having an issue w/the signal from my backup camera. I also spliced it near the under-dash fuse box to feed signal to the Kenwood nav unit I installed but it has worked fine like this for well over a year now. Recently I started having an issue where the rear view mirror picture is very noisy and I pretty much can't even make out the picture and my nav unit just gets a black screen like it's not getting enough power to push the signal to the nav unit or possibly the nav unit itself has a feature that cuts out noisy video signals which I doubt. It could be my wire splice but I doubt it as I seemed to notice it around the time we started getting lots of rain and flooding around here. I wonder if the camera itself isn't weather sealed and if it could have got wet and shorted something out. If this were the case I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one to complain about this issue so before tearing all my wiring (which may be fine) apart I wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue or heard of it before w/o any factory wire tampering.

I got a 2010 4x4 trd and wired the camera signal to my pioneer head unit and don't see a problem, wet or not. I've been running it wired to head unit for a only couple months though.

 

I'm talking more about the physical camera/housing itself. Not really about the splice. I'm wondering if anyone with the factory backup camera has had this issue that I described.

 

yes and that is what I am saying. I spray water on to the camera all the time when I wash the truck and it works fine. but since it is spliced, I would think first that as the source of the problem rather than the camera itself being not waterproof.

 

I didn't buy the truck new (20k miles) but since I have owned it (another 20k or so miles) I don't drop the tailgate. Learned that lesson good as a young wipper snapper on the farms of Nebraska.

 

This was my first suspect as well but just wanted to check about the camera as someone I know in the biz said that sometimes water can affect OEM cameras so I wanted to ask specifically on a Tacoma forum before I started ripping into rat's nest under my dash.

 

when I tapped the head unit to the video signal, I did not have to remove the fuse panel. the connection was accessible up front.
the backup wire line, I followed this (the mod op instructions for backup wire line did not work on 2010)

I was wondering why you said you have to rip out a rats nest, when the proper wiring does not have to deal with a rats nest, so yes it is related. anyway, good luck to you and bye.

 

I was being facetious. I assure you that my wiring is very neat and tidy I just have a lot of electrical stuff going on so I'd rather not start digging around if this is a common prob... you know what? What are you here? Isn't there another thread you could be padding your post count in?
