I agree with BlueT. That's what is happening to my frame. The expanding rust is distorting the frame and reinforcement that is riveted to it.

I emailed Toyota about Iowa not being included in the recall states and received information about the limited service campaign but the Iowa question was not addressed.

I replied with the following information I gleaned from the Iowa and Kentucky DOT's websites. Iowa has approx. 25,000 lane miles of highway to which on average they apply approx. 232,000 tons of rock salt, 14.4m gallons of brine and 96,000 tons of calcium chloride flakes per winter season. That is a rate of 9.3 tons off rock salt and 577 gallons of brine per lane mile per winter. Kentucky doesn't used calcium chloride flakes but uses 96,000 tons of rock salt and 1,330,000 gallons of brine and liquid calcium chloride on its 62,000 lane miles or about 1.5 tons of rock salt per mile per winter and about 214 gallons of brine and liquid calcium chloride per lane mile per winter.

I don't think I have to research average winter temps for Iowa and Kentucky since most sixth graders could look at a map and guess which state would be colder in the winter so I leave it to you to figure out why Iowa is not included in Toyota's list of "cold weather states".

Unite Iowa and deluge Toyota with The Question!

^^^^^ THIS! ^^^^^^ Thanks BlueT as this was what I was about to type. ;)

The issue is our frames rust from the inside out. No amount of prep or coating we apply will stop this.

After seeing this thread, I just logged into my Owner page at Toyota and yes, I have the LSC posted under my truck. I'm going to make an appointment and get it looked at. I've been under my 2007 many times and my frame, so far, doesn't look bad at all. Some expected surface rust but... I cannot see between the layers. ;) FWIW, I don't wash mine often enough and I only use it when I cannot ride my FZ1 to work.... basically I'm a T.I.T.S. driver. Ha!

But you're in VA correct? As the OP states, at this time, the only states authorized to do this are all New England minus CT. Be patient. It does state this will be done in phases so your state's turn is coming. ;)

I wonder when they will do this in WV. I looked under my truck today and she is rusting out right beside the catalytic converter on the driver side. So if the frame is rusted out badly enough that they can not repaint it they are going to replace the frame?

I don't know where you guys are getting your info but CT and WV are included in this limited service campaign. Both states are listed in the letter I got.

I am not questioning if they are going to do it. I am questioning when they were going to do it. I was under the impression that they were going to do select states at a time.

Hell, they wouldn't even look at the pictures, I seriously doubt they'd sign something.

I've bought three vehicles from this dealer and for them to not want to even look at the issue, much less express any sort of interest really irks the sh*t out of me.

Thanks Miller Toyota on Sudley Road for that fine outstanding show of customer service

I've half a mind to rent the empty building across from their new building currently under construction and post large blinding billboards saying how wonderful they are

I am under the impression that these first several states are the test cases; if this works out, they'll roll on thru the other states. If not, I see this "gesture of good will" disappearing into nothingness.

I think it's very important for the NTHSA to become involved in this and force toyota to issue a recall to fix these trucks correctly, with frames and frame components that are manufactured correctly.

I think they spec'd these frames with the lowest quality steel they could get away with and spent the bare minimum to "protect" them. It's like different types of stainless steel; the lower quality stainless will rust. Stainless will also show rust if it is cleaned with a carbon steel wire wheel.

I hope that whomever is getting this "spray on fix" posts an assload of pictures when they get their truck back or by some stroke of luck, happens to get action shots of how they put in on.

Not this service campaign but a member of the last. Traded in my '03 last weekend after I stuck my finger thru the frame. It was coated by Toyota in '10 as part of the earlier rust campaign. You can see how well it worked. >roll eyes<

Good news it they offered to replace the frame.

Just rolled all around under it on the creeper and snapped a load of photos. Officially, the truck will be 8 yrs old in Sept. All miles put on in New England and mostly in winter. Outside of some expected surface rust, I can't find anything wrong with mine. Most of the finish is still on the frame and the surface rust is primarily at the welds. I'm betting they simply apply the chemicals and send me on my way. But I know if I DON'T get this done, then when trouble does appear later, they will do nothing because I didn't respond to this LSC. I think I'm luckier than most because it really looks good for its age.

If they do the coating 2 days. If they replace the frame it is a 3-4 week process, depending on your truck. Yes they give you a rental.
