Soundproofing a 2nd Gen Tacoma

I'm thinking about soundproofing my father's 2nd Gen Prerunner.

Can anyone tell me where most of the noise comes from? If I do it at all, I probably won't do the entire cab, only the "loudest" areas.

Does that make sense?

 

Roof and windshield would be my guess. Good luck on the glass!

 

It seems like the floors would be a big culprit of road noise. I'm no car audio guru by any means it just seems like that would be louder than the roof?

Doors, floors, rear wall are the main areas. There isn't much you can do about the door seals and the windshield.

 

I'm thinking about doing mine as well because my mud terrains kill the sound of my system...how hard is it to do?

 

I put dynamat on the back wall 1st, then the doors a few weeks later, it has made a huge difference. I still want to do the roof and engine bay.

 

Sound deadening materials can be very heavy. It may kill your MPG's a little bit.
Floors are a must then back wall. doors and roof are always a good option too. be careful doing the rear wall though. if you cover the vents you may cause a pressure inside the cabin that can be harmful and cause your windows to break. that last but is heresay.

 

nothing you just said makes any sense. weight your talking 30-50 pounds depending on how many layers you do. harmful to the windows WTF?

My truck has 2 layers of RaAmatt on the doors, floor, and back wall, and it is quite.

I have done this with several vehicles. One vehicles weight increased almost 500 lbs.
re-read what I said. I didn't say it was harmful to the windows. I said if you cover the vents in the rear wall then you effect the cabin pressure. i have heard of blown out windows due to doing that in trucks. Never seen it first hand thought but have felt a difference in the cabin if the vents are covered.

 

wait....what? Which kind of sound deadening material are you talking about that would weigh 500 LBS. When guys compete they might throw in the sand bags and such...but for a street car....500 lbs...no way

 

500 pounds lol. wow you crack me up even more with your explanation. i don't even know what to say anymore except laugh. i don't know what you use or where you get this idea of cabin pressure, but its all not true.

 

I would assume the floor and roof. They seem to have the least of anything blocking sound from coming in. Later on you would move to the rear wall and doors but I would start at the roof and floor.

 

Like others stated, do the floor, doors, and rear. I used a combination of raamat and second skin products.

 

In order of biggest difference made in my truck
#1- Doors
#2- Rear wall
#3 - Roof
#4 - Floor

 

Go ahead and laugh. i don't care. I had a Suburban where I completely used a 3 layers to do the roof, floors, pillars,firewall and all the doors.

 

you didnt say you put three layers in a freaking bus...our trucks wouldnt take near that much, three layers is a little overkill you think?

 

Overkill Definitely. i had a competition stereo in it. It is a ll relative.

 

The OP is not talking about a competition vehicle, he's talking about his father's Tacoma. One layer of sound deadening material is sufficient and will yield great results.

 

Actually - it IS true.

Most modern vehicles have one or more flap-type vents in the cab area for air pressure relief. Before this was common practice you could damage window glass or seals by slamming the doors in a well-sealed cab (I've seen it happen).

The 2005+ Tacomas have such a pressure vent in the rear cab wall. On Access Cabs it's located low in the middle of the back wall.

The point is that you don't want to put in deadening material so that the vent is totally sealed / blocked off.
