Did it keep the bugs off the windshield?

^What he said. Bug splatters on the hood? How does it keep windshield clean? Sounds like snake oil to me...

Dosn't keep mine clean but does protect the leading edge of the hood from chips.

I think it would be worth the extra cost and weight of it to justify getting one.

    Thanks for posting this OP.

Just something else I know I will be getting when I do get a Taco.

I like mine, I've experimented a few times and it actually seems to make things quieter on the highway. I've never noticed a bit of difference with MPG's, have definitely noticed a difference with bugs on the windshield, and can't say whether it protects from rock chips or not since I've always had it on.

    None atm.
I have been tempted to get one myself. The dealer installed a clear bra on my Tacoma, I bet the bug shield would work better for rock chips though.

I got the Weathertech model a few weeks ago and, love it. It's low profile, and screws into factory holes under the hood.

The leading edge of the hood gets pretty hammered w/ bugs in the summer; it's good piece of mind that it's protected.

    Yeah.
I have the AVS. I came back from a trip last year and the front of my truck was worse than the OP's, but my windshield was not bad. So it seems to help with bugs, but it doesn't eliminate them. I have seen it send a rock over the roof as well, but most tend to miss the guard and smack the windshield anyway. Thankfully no chips yet.

hid head lights, hid fog lights, always on fog lights, bed lights
it works on the principle of deflecting air upwards to create an air curtain or shield. the faster your speed, the faster/stronger the air stream. So depending on the size of the bug, the upwards air stream may not be enough to push the bug up over the roof so it does not hit the windshield. for small bugs, it will work.

Mine doesn't come in contact with the outside of the hood.

Why would somebody take off their bug shield later on, anyway? (do that many guys swap hoods?)

 don't say that....it will never come off lol. Alot of bugs did get deflected but not completely, most of my bugs were on the side pillars and top portions of the windshield.

Bevis0076... I installed an OEM bugshield the day I bought my 2006 and removed it at 175,000 miles. Believe it or not, those clear looking pads that go between the bracket and the painted hood lasted all that time. I had no damage to my hood what so ever after all of that time... color me surprised too!

After all that time the finish on the bugshield looked pretty flat. Nothing other than wax made it look better but not for long.

Got one OEM on my taco on delivery along with locking lugs. No experience in terms of bug protection, but I find it almost gives an aggressive styling over the headlights. So far for me, it's been cosmetic and I think it looks great!

TRD Exhaust, Mobtown bolt on sliders and aluminum tailgate reinforcement, Reverse lights changed to yellow turn signals, LED pods added for reverse, ADD W1 oil catch can, Total Chaos bed reinforcement, rear diff breather to taillight mod, 12" combo led bars behind lower grill wired to high beams, Toyota led bed light kit, 400 watt anytime mod, SSO slimeline front bumper.
The Toyota shield I had on my 02 gen 1 worked great and never contacted the paint.

I bought the AVS model for my gen 2 because of so many people saying the Toyota shield would rub the paint. So far so good with the AVS it's raised up away from the hood and does not contact at any point.
