hey guys im looking for a tacoma 4x4 trd offroad in manual but im having a very hard time doing so.I want the offroad version because it comes with the rear locking differential.Im wondering if i can just get a different model and have a toyota dealer install one ? im assuming the base models are cheaper then the offroad version? since i will be adding a 6 inch lift and tires later on anyways. I might as well just get the normal trd version and i was just wondering the difference between the trd and the trd sr5 any help will be much apprectiated thanks :)

Can't really help you with the rest, but I can tell you that TRD trim packages (Offroad and Sport) already have SR5 included.

You could always buy any model, and then add an aftermarket locker. Ex: ARB air locker.

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
The factory locker can not easily be installed later. The entire rear axle housing is different then the non Locker tacomas.

There are several nice aftermarket lockers you could get. ARB makes a reliable one.

Also consider a limited slip instead of a locker. Many Tacomas come with it. For most situations it beats a locker.

If you are really serious about a 6in lift that is off-road capable you'll be making huge modifications to the suspension, etc. The Tacoma can take a 3” suspension lift. Then you could add a body lift on that I guess to attain 6". A 6" suspension only lift will be expensive. I'd get a very base truck and build up from that. Why waste money on upgraded suspension in tje TRD that you'll pull off anyway.

And with your budget you can probably get a new Tacoma base model ordered in a manual transmission.

Really? Because I like not having to keep my foot on the clutch to go over obstacles. Have you even driven a Tacoma manual? Because once you do I garuntee that you will want to get the auto instead.

Don't start an auto is better than manual war... to each there own.

Personally I prefer a manual for offroad. My cuuent Tacoma is my 1st auto I have ever owned. I got the auto for towing and sitting in rush hour stop-n-go traffic. I admit it handles impressively well offroad. But still feels "sloppy" in holding a speed, shifting right when I don't want it to. But since I drive on-pavement 90% of the time (based on mileage anyway) the aautotrans is perfect for me.

But if I ever buy a dedicated wheeler rig I will get a manual. That's me, I find them more fun and more controllable.

This is what I am doing. Got the base model manual and will be throwing a better air locker than the stock electronic lockers

Not sure what market you are looking at. Here in the NW, there quite a few TRD 6 speeds for sale and in your $ range. A few were even lifted. Granted these were AutoTrader & CL ads. The dealers has nothing.

I managed to get mine (2008 with 125,000 miles) used for $16,500 (Canadian).

You're right, they are tough to find. Keep at it and one will come up. Don't be afraid to broaden your search; I had to drive 4.5 hours each way to get mine, but it was totally worthwhile.

Come on dude, that's uncalled for.

As someone with a manual Off Road, I couldn't be happier. It all comes down to preference, and no one person's opinion is any more valid than anyone else's.

Like others have said, I would go with the SR5 model. You can get it for around $28k maybe a little more and build it up the way you want it. I would also consider 3" instead of 6" like posted earlier you will spend a lot more for the 3" extra inches while not really gaining extra off-road capabilities. Also I would test drive auto and stick before you buy just to make sure.

I have an SR5 manual access cab v6 and love it. For going into mountains, towing, or anything other than commuting I really like the manual and being able to control the shifts.

To set it up for wheeling you'll probably drop

$1,200 on a 3" lift with new shocks and control arms.

The TRD Offroad skid plates are ok but don't seem like they'd hold up to a good hit by a rock. So $600 on skid plates.

$1200-$1300 on an ARB Locker + air pump.

    $800 - New tires.

The TRD off-road package is about $1500 more and includes larger tires, an e-locker, and factory skid plates.

For what it's worth I got my 2014 with the etune premium w/nav SR5 for about $29,500 before taxes and title fees, about $1000 less than MSRP.
