I'm on DSL internet..I know, not the fastest, but does what I need it to do.

Past couple of weeks my laptop seems to be running slower than usual. I've done a restore to 4 wks ago, got rid of some old crap in the disk cleanup, defragmented, and no real change. Using anything streaming like Youtube is always a problem in particular.

How can I check my connection speed? And what should it be? I'm using Verizon DSL with a Cisco router.

Im not sure what your speeds should be as it depends on what you pay for, at least with my isp, but you can check your connection speed by using www.speedtest.net

Okay well the ping seems fine but your download and upload speeds are really really slow. Maybe someone with a little more knowledge can chime in to help. Have you tried resetting your router?

Google Bleeping Computer....download and run "AdwCleaner".

    Download and run...."Hitman Pro".

    Download and run "Malwarebytes".

It is best to download these free programs, then reboot to "safe mode" to run them.

Comodo free security will let you run your pc / programs in a "sandbox" which will keep everything safe.

    Good luck!

lol, THIS RIGHT HERE would be part of your problem. That download speed is absolutely horrid. I'm on cable with the basic package and my download speed is around 16 mbps. I would call your ISP and find out what your speeds should be because that download is really bad. The basic package on DSL I thought was around at least 3 mbps.

I have a desktop as well that I rarely use except to print stuff. I'll try the test on that PC later.

If it's slow or faster, what do I do next?

Assuming the PC runs faster, that would mean my router or laptop I'm guessing.

Would it help if I tie the laptop right in with the Ethernet cable and test it again?

Cycle the power on your DSL modem, then your router. Sometimes the wireless can slow down or acts funny. If your Internet runs faster over Ethernet than Wi-Fi, it could be a router issue. If your Internet is slow over Ethernet on both PC and laptop, than it could be something on Verizon's end.

Check your router settings as well . Some routers allow the host computer faster service than the others . Its a matter of changing your settings in the router giving the wireless service a faster connection

When you cycle the power on the DSL modem and Router remove the power cord from the device, do not just hit the power button, keep devices disconnected from power for 1 minute. Reattach power to DSL modem first wait for indictaion light to show normal operation, then reattach power to the router.

If you still have low speeds contact the provider.
