My computer is starting to bog pretty bad. I think I might have caught a little something. I have already run disk defrag. Any good free anitvirus and anti spy ware you can suggest?

 

AVG for anti-virus and Ad-aware and or Spybot for spyware. All can be found on download.com or via google search. I use them all the time. Good luck!

 

What he said. I use CNET.com for free software. Biggest problem with googling software. Sometimes it looks like you are getting the software you googled, when in fact you are getting something else. Or it is a version you have to buy. Plus CNET has reviews from users like you.

Another thing you may want to consider. Upgrade your ram(memory). In todays time, webpages are more of a memory hog than even 2 years ago. Plus with added highspeed internet you may not be getting the full performance, if your PC can't keep up. The common misconception is that people think you need a bigger processor or new PC. When in fact if you bump your memory up it will do more good than a bigger processor or new PC.

 

Yeah that is a good point, knowing the source you are downloading from is generally a good idea. Same with memory upgrades.. it can make a pretty significant difference, and is shouldn't be too expensive either.

 

Get yourself the comodo internet suite (free firewall, antivirus and monitors your background). AVG is also a free one (mentioned earlier), so is s-squared...

Download spybot S&D, install it - let it scan your system during the next boot up;
Download the Eusing registry cleaner and run it;



Every time you install software, your registry is written to, even if you un-install the s/w, it doesn't remove everything from the pc, including cleanup of the registry. If you install/uninstall a lot of programs, the boot up will take longer as windows still searches the paths from the registry.

If you install a lot of programs, your pc will also be sluggish because of the preload of programs during startup (check the bottom right had side of the screen, the more icons, the more crap pre-loads). You can clean a lot of that junk up and increase your speed.

How much ram do you have?

 

+1 for AVG running it for over a year now and no problems... use limewire too

 

I have a Mac, so I don't have to deal with AV software.

But when I had a PC, I used CCleaner all the time.

 

I hear frostwire is safer & better. I downloaded it recently, much faster than Limewire.

Also try going to trendmicro and doing a houscall online scan

malware bytes is a very good one

and so is ad-aware.

plus I would suggest go to start-run-msconfig
and removing anything from the start up that you do not need, this will increase your performance a lot

 

none of these programs are safe they are all equally as bad you should be torrenting not peer to peering

Yeah I work at an ISP, now this is in canada and I dont know how it works in the us, but when they send you that message saying they know what you donwloaded they are basically saying we know you did it and we cant do shit about it. The ISP I work for gets these messages all the time and we are supposed to let out subscribers know about it. We dont tho we just ignore them cause there is no law sayig we have to and there is no law broken.

If you just use private trackers, aka private torrent sites such as torrentleech and bitsoup.org you cannot get caught cause it is not a public tracker.
