+1 to what the first response was, check frame for rust. It is a common problem and that is a lot of miles! As for the electric fan, I had no idea about that. Sounds like a mod more people should be doing!

I guess it's all a matter of perspective. I just picked up my Tacoma yesterday - V6 Access cab, and it seems pretty quiet to me. However, my point of comparison is my 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited, which has a 5.9 liter magnum V8 you could hear sing and purr clearly at all times.

This. I hate the way the motor sounds. But it is know to run pretty much forever as long as you keep up on general maintenance.

The motor on my 2.7 RC isn't too loud, unless I really stomp on it. Then you can really hear 'er.

My biggest complaint about the truck is the cab noise, and not really engine/fan noise. Rain comes down hard enough to bruise at times in Florida, and when the gods start pissin' on ya here, you have to turn the radio up so loud to hear a story that my ears will ring at the end of the trip.

I have a flex a lite 2 fans not the one that lc engineering has.. I love the damn thing... My taco was F* loud as hell with that fan (stock one) now with flex rite fans its alot less noisy..

Imo my engine runs better when the fans do kick in im impressed how fast it cools down.. Funny thing winter time it never cut on ONCE... Summer only time it kicks in when im sitting at a stop light for awhile... this is the 5vz engine...

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.

    ...compared to Diesel engines.

    precisely.

they could use a ranger or s10 or some shit, it would be quieter, sure. and it would never get spotted 'cause it would only leave the maint hangar once a fuggin month!

I think the main reason we used them in 2003 was they were available on the open market and they helped us blend in with the locals while traveling in small groups. Here's a picture of the truck I bounced around Afghanistan in...

    Nice.

BTW, thank you for your service, sir.

And, yea, you can get Taco/Hilux parts in pretty much 99% of the countries that exist. Major bonus :)

I dont have a sec gen  but i do have a first gen taco.. these things are very good. IMO... Second gen you can only use a single fan but the 1 gen fans do have some flex set ups ( depends on your rad i guess).. I can post a pic of mine if you would like ( got unlazy now) ... Had mine for like 3 years no problems at all that it...

Planning on doing my tundra with flex fans also.. i hate to say it but imo makes the engine bay more cleaner with them...

You can see the controller right in front of the filler neck for the windshield washer.. Its adjustable..

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
    Oh it be true.

Read this recent letter to Toyota North America about a recent combat use of the Tacoma 2nd Gen. Has some great pictures.

This TW thread is all about it. Some great pics and stories form TW members.

Brian's Blog is the source of much of the Wikipedia article on Tacomas.

Toyota themselves have barely made mention to this use of their trucks, while quite impressive, the Taliban and other terrorist organizations around the world love this truck also - it could easily be said that Toyota is the choice of terrorists. So, they keep mum on the whole thing.

    Very much this.

As a news junkie I get dark bemusement from how often pictures of 'terrorists' are taken with a bunch of teenagers driving around in a Taco or Hilux and AK-47s. They're the backbone of rugged transportation all over the place.

They already did that and it was a bit of a flop.
The Tundra and T100 have more in common with each other than the Tundra and any generation Tacoma. The 1st gen Tundra is slightly larger than the Tacoma... 2nd gen is almost there, but not quite, it's still a couple of inches shy in several dimensions and a few cubic feet smaller in the bed.

I miss my '03 Tundra. Should never have sold it.

Power slider? I didn't have that on my '03 TRD O/R, and don't recall it on the Limited (did have power seats though). The Doublecab did introduce the power rear window rolling up and down, and I remember everyone making a big deal about it and wishing they could retrofit their Access Cab trucks.

Yes. They always have been and the cabs have a lot of noise (always have).
    I love them.
