Used Tacoma, only one key, one fob?

After doing some digging, turns out I can save a bunch of money and purchase a new fob on eBay for a fraction if the dealer cost.

My next, question and one I'm not clear on is... Since I only have one key, can I go to Wally's and get a second key made? Or do I need to get one from the dealer, because there is some chip or coded key proprietary to the truck? I'm really hoping I can just have one made, and my truck will start.

Truck is a 2010, DC, PreRunner, V6, SR5.

There is a chip in it. I just had one made and programmed at the dealer for $100-$110. But you can find the blanks, get it cut and program it yourself. Search TW again for more info.

 

I had a local locksmith cut a key and program it to my truck for $75. He had to plug a electronic scanner into my truck's computer to register the new key so the truck would recognize it.

 

Wally World has begun making chipped keys. They program the new ones using the freq from the one they copy.

 

Get a new master key made immediately; think about getting two made. If you lose the only one you have, it'll be very expensive to replace the electronics. It takes a scan device to program a new key but an existing original key is required to enable additional keys.
The fob may be programmable w/o the scan device.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here... but OP has a 4 cyl so his key doesn't have a chip. In that case Wally World or anyone can cut a key pretty cheap.

 

OOPS My mistake; ziggynagy is right; 4 cyls don't come with chip keys. Wally can do it and a new fob should have a programming instruction sheet.

 

It says in his first post 6-cyl.

OP, can you clarify. hoarder's right, didn't see the first post said V6. But OP's vehicle description under his name is '14, PreRunner, DC, 2.7 which would mean he has a 4-banger.

If you have a V6, it's chipped and you'll see a small G on your key. I4 isn't chipped and can be cut anywhere.

 

No prob guys, I had not updated my sig. I own both a '14 2.7, DC & just picked up a '10 4.0, DC. Both trucks are for my business, the '10, V6 was the one I was looking for a key for. *Good news* the dealer where I purchased the truck from used, called and got the missing keys/ fob from family that traded it in.
