    Who needs doors?

    Just got my truck home.
    Carnage list grew a little:

    Third member grenaded
    Twisted and bent axle shaft
    Popped a U-joint
    Bent wheel
Possible bent drive shaft. It still has some crazy vibrations after replacing everything else on the list. I'm about to pour some gas on it and toss a match. Time for a new build anyway. The problem is, there isn't a better platform available to build off of. Even if I went and bought a brand new Tacoma it's no different than what I have... maybe I'll wait for the new diesel tundy...
What would you buy if you had to replace your Tacoma?

I would love to put 37's on a stock X-runner, but 2wd's are as worthless as tits on a boar to me.

    Saw you too.

    Thank you sir.

Damn. Was this after the damage to the axle?

Have you looked at a 4Runner? If you didn't want to build up a new one I saw a mid 90s LT runner on craigslist

I don't know if it happened all at once or I just now noticed all of the bent shit. It makes lots of noise at speed, I generally ignore clanks and creaks until I see parts in the road behind me. :D It did have a very hard weekend. Several hundred miles of two track as fast as it would go...airborne several times...hillclimbs...just an all around hoon fest.

I've already done the 4runner thing, twice. Also two K5 blazers. I like removable tops...but the new ones are just too milftastic for me and the older ones don't have enough power. I wish I had the time to just do a tube chassis from scratch with solid components from the get go. Like a nice, reasonable LS6 just under 500hp so it can run on shit gas, a well built turbo 400 mated to an atlas T-case in a chassis light enough I could get away with a 9" rear and F9 front on some TT style center mount arms...

The wifey is not the problem, she is also a gear head and has pre-approved a rebuild of the taco or a new build. Money isn't really an issue, but I don't want to throw bad money at the problem replacing weak parts ad nauseam, I want to fix the problem permanently. The goal is to build a vehicle capable of safe, reliable high speed offroad travel with two people, a dog, and assorted gear (camping gear, fishing poles, rifles, etc) that also has the capability to get the places I need it to go (4LO locked front and rear) and can haul an elk back to camp. It also has to be streetable for long highway stretches (I hate trailering rigs around). In addition, I rarely wheel with anyone else, so it needs to be self sufficient. Spares need to be kept on board to repair likely failed items, and I need to be able to get unforseen repair parts at a local NAPA or parts store. That is a rare asian unicorn indeed. I could build such a beast from scratch easier than buying a stock rig and converting it imo, but since I already have the taco this far...I'll probably just end up stuffing a decent 9" axle under it with a strong driveline and get rid of the heavy bead locks. 150lb wheel and tire combos are tough, but they eat parts... who knows where this will go. Need to think on it for a while.

Maybe an '98-99 K2500 as a chassis and build up fro. There. Basically the same thing that you did with the Tacoma but on a larger frame

Sounds like what I want haha. I figure money is the biggest issue. It seems like the parts that will take that abuse hit crazy price points. I'm coming to the conclusion that the easiest way to make it happen is to have a rig that is easy to service and actually do major preemptive service on a regular basis. Make it as easy as possible to pull the drivetrain and get to everything electrical. Seems like the biggest factor that separates race teams that don't break from ones that do is crazy thorough and consistent race prep. The problem is making a DD type rig that, that can be done on even more than super high end parts after a certain point.

That and building in some sort of easily dealt with weak point. Something like the sheer pins that a bunch of our farm implements have. Its an easily accessible weak point that is cheap and easy to replace and breaks before anything significant does. I don't understand why the hell this isn't done on drivelines and CV's.

And then finding a way to deal with fatigue issues. That's my biggest concern at the moment. Still need to find a donor frame to beef up...

Find an old scout. Those things don't die, and parts are interchangeable with most vehicles
