In an economy that's driven itself to a higher cost of living, higher cost for housing and a now mandated health care system yet still pays it's base workforce a wage that is below an reasonable level then the economy can't sustain itself.

Seems to me and I am by no mean a economics major but... If the housing cost is driven up, property taxes increase, sales tax increase and added health care costs increase but the wage for work at a "menial" level does not increase then your economy is relying on the higher wage earners to supplement the gap.

What's the threshold ? I mean if the minimum wage is approx $10 now , would everybody be freaking out if it went to $12 ? Or $13 ?

I'm sure there's more than a few MBAs on here, and I know for a fact that there are a few more with college-level economics.

Some things are as predictable as gravity... and there will always be the snarky comment about the "rocket scientists" predicting what will happen when you drop a quarter.

As a business owner I would not pay someone more than they are worth. Skill and effort should = pay level. $15 bucks an hour is too much for some work. sorry if you fall into that category. Get off your azz and better yourself. Don't rely on big brother.
This is why America has fallen so far. People don't try to better themselves anymore. They just complain that their life sucks until some ignorant politician does something for them.

Work hard. Move up or move on.
I know a kid that just graduated from high school, within a month he was making $17/hr. Why... because he is a hard worker, and built good references while in high school, making close to minimum wage.

Living costs are driven up in major cities because of over-migration and population. People like to go to major cities in hopes of getting a higher paying job because many large corporations are there. However, most dont land high paying jobs, but stay in the cities to try to make it working minimum wage jobs. They crowd housing, drive food prices up, and demand higher wages for non/low-skilled jobs. One good fix is to encourage the emigration of poor families with government assistance to places where they can afford a higher standard of living with the wages they are currently earning in the major cities. Just my .02

as the free movement of ideas, capital, and financing has rapidly increased the growth of our country and economy, so has to be the free and unobstructed movement of labor and population.

One good example is people complaining that jobs are all going overseas to China, India, etc. Well, what if you can follow those jobs to those countries, would you go? That explores the other benefits and compensation or lack there of certain jobs that go or stay within our borders.

It applies anywhere you have gov making decisions that should be market decisions. Seattle did lead the charge. I also think Seattle matters because they had started offering benefits for many employees who traditionally didn't have them before. To me, health care and retirement are big ticket items-and very likely, those are gone as a result. And someone who makes $10-$12/hour and has benefits has more disposable income.

That said, I don't disagree that a minimum wage is necessary. I just don't think it should be that high. It sounds harsh, I know but where's the incentive to better yourself? To me, it's the better educated worker who is higher paid that contributes more to the economy than the person who's just getting by on $15/hr.

It seems the big issues is that fact it's going to be $15 and hour. What isn't being mentioned is that it's going to be phased in over then next 3 years (4 if you're an employer offering health insurance or benefits).

People need to realize minimum wage jobs are training jobs not jobs to make a living off of! This is socialism not capitalism. I mean do you really want to pay more for a burger or goods?

Especially where in an entry level job there are enough people out there. I worked as a building cleaner in college, starting pay was $6/hr. One guy was making $7/hr and asked for a raise. He was told it's not worth it to the owner b/c he can replace him easily for less $.

This is what I was brought up to do in life. From day 1 I was told there's no free lunch, want better do better.

You would be correct. Having worked in finance for years I can tell you this is a good thing. The only people against it are either ignorant or profiteering from it.

    Yeah.
The Seattle area is already one of the most expensive places in the US to do business, and the City of Seattle has some pretty employee-friendly laws already. The continuation of this trend is not surprising. For instance, if your child's daycare gets shut down temporarily to be disinfected, the parent gets the day off with pay. And it gets complicated when the employee lives on one side of the boundary and works on the other side. Which adds more cost to larger businesses that are spread out, making sure they are managing all the differences.

There are some big tech companies in the area, and those are mainly non-union white collar jobs that are helping keep the economy healthy. Sure, the union and strikes make big companies like Boeing look at taking steps to ensure business continuity, but it is not just the unions that are starting to drive some companies away. The white collar wages are significantly higher there -- not because the people are any smarter or do more work, but because the cost of living is higher due in part to the cost of services provided by non-professional wage earners. As companies become more national and global, where do you think they will put their jobs? In a high-cost area like Seattle? Doubtful.

Don't ask me how I know.

From what I see here in NC, many of these minimum wage jobs are filled by Hispanic people. Why? Because they are happy to have an opportunity to work even if it's for minumum wage, where as many Americans are not willing to. The attitude is that we are better than the jobs that are available. It's not good. Hard work will always pay off, and we aren't doing it. 'Merica needs an attitude adjustment... Something about a high horse...
