Greasing Entire Drive Shaft U-Joints (5 Zerks Total)

I actually watched a demonstration against the top 5 brands of oil and it surpassed them all with the best lubricating properties. I really don't understand why its not sold in stores.

 

That's nonsense.

I think people over think this. All grease is, is an oil lubricant with a lithium complex soap thickener added. The base oil can be dino, or synthetic.

I've been using the Mobil 1 synthetic EP grease for 4 years now. Works very well, no issues at all.

However, that said I think the brand doesn't really matter IMO... What matters when selecting a grease for the u-joints is that it's NLGI grade 2, and EP rated. I know Toyota specs a different grease for the front u-joints NLGI grade 1), but in reality the Toyota dealer techs I've spoken to don't do this, they just use NLGI grade 2 all around.

 

Yea, Ill stick with the same Mobil1 I have been using for over 6 years with no failures.

There is no need to "prolong" greasing your zerks. They are not sealed so shit gets in them. If you decide to not purge the crap out I don;t care what grease your using they will fail quicker than greasing them at proper intervals.

Let me guess you were not speaking to anyone who knows anything about lubricants. Same guys prob says baby oil is the best lube for sex with condoms meanwhile 5 kids pulling on his pant leg

I recently did my differential oil change and greased the u joints again, this time I got the mobil 1 grease. Regarding the fitting that had grease oozing back out, I noticed the ball was in place. It must have positioned itself back once the joint started spinning. Also I had a hard time greasing the front joints before, and realized this time I can turn the shaft by hand. So it went pretty easy this time. Although after turning it, when I drove the truck and switched to H4, it took a while before the light stopped blinking even though I can feel the front is already engaged.

I think I am up to date now with all required maintenance, almost 60k. (also recently changed spark plugs).

 

i did my 2009 reg cab 4x4 today. 4 zerks total. one zerk on each u-joint at the end of each drive shaft.

the front ones are kindof inside the u-joint and harder to get to. the rears are on the outside and super easy to get to.

50k miles on my truck.

i was thinking about it after i did it that on my 1988 1st gen truck i never greased anything and drove it 300k miles with no issues.

the front shaft zerks only took about 2-3 pumps before it oozed out. the back shaft took about 5-6 pumps.

i think greasing them every oil change is overkill. the manual only says to do it every 30k miles. i think you can go every 50k miles and be totally fine though.

i used john deere NLGI #2 multi-purpose polyurea grease. that is what i already had for my lawn mower. it says it's good for u-joints.

Uh, I just found 9 zerks along my "propeller shafts" ... 1st gen 4x4 double cab. I'm starting a thread with photos and videos.

Not only am I 1st gen, I'm 4x4 which is why I think I counted 3 more than the OP shows. Here's my thread.

 

I have an 08 DCSB and bought it used from a dealership. When I checked my driveshaft to find the zerks, I didn't find any! So, either I have an aftermarket driveline that doesn't have any greasable points(zerks) or the 08 dcsb's don't come with any. Does anyone know?

 

Just greased my shaft today! LOL, took about 5mins.

What type of grease do you all recommend?

 

Greasy grease, though I'd stay away from bacon grease and lard. Duck fat might be gold, but......

I use Lucas Red'n'Tacky #2

 

Mobil 1 synthetic grease or royal purple 2?
I need to do this asap! Lol
