I see both sides of that in MA. My wife runs group homes for adults with special needs, and some of her staff came here from other countries specifically to work. Mind you they're not making much more than minimum wage of $8/hr either. Some will work at another agency part or full time as well. I myself have always believed that any job is better than not having a job when you don't have unemployent helping out.

A recently former friend of mine got laid off last April from a good job making about 55k a year. Part of it was he was content to collect and to drink and piss away what little he had versus keeping his car legal and getting clothes for interviewing. He is currently at Home Depot part time for $10 an hr because it's what he could get right now since his unemployment ran out.

Here in MA we've basically had Obamacare for a while now and it's not killing the little man.

If you are working minimum wage and you are not in college, high school or an illegal immigrant then you are an idiot. it's no one's fault but your own. Sorry but not all jobs merit 15 an hour. If you work hard and show you are worth your salt you will make more money. I dropped out of high school in 10 grade. Now I own a business because I worked my ass off. Not because big brother taxed someone or mandated I make more money than my job was worth. I made it to where I am today by working hard learning and taking the risk of starting a business. That is what American is about. Not waiting around doing nothing until the nanny state takes care of you. If you don't like making minimum wage then do something about it. Don't just cry about it. Make something of yourself.

If other states follow suit, it wont make a difference.

    Why?

    1. If minimum wage is raised, hours will be cut, and employees wont see the difference. So much for pushing a law if you cant "cash" into it.

    2. If hours dont get cut, the prices of common goods will go up to make up for the loss, if minimum wage goes up 50%, per se, price of common goods will go up 50%; Therefore, the consumer/employee wont see any extra cash, itll all go towards paying for the higher priced goods.

Just an example, my two copper pennies.

It's official. Lock / close the thread because smoke has spoke. Clearly, if you are of a different opinion you're ignorant or a profiteer. If you have any questions about his ability to state these facts just look at his credentials...after all he has "worked in finance for years".

I've posted in this thread but as of yet haven't taken/decided or offered my own thoughts on the subject. But this cat ^ is awesome. :). I really do love his passion even if I believe his communication skills to be horrendous.

I'm guessing he does have some passing familiarity and that may be where his passion stems...that said, I'd really like to hear his thoughts on some of the following...

1.). You seem to imply profit is bad, why is that?

2.). Without creation of additional wealth, where will the funds come from to pay the same number of people to work the same number of hours?

3.). Why doesn't the new minimum wage apply to all employees within the same jurisdiction?

4.). If raising the wage is good, why stop at $15 an hour? Why not $25 an hour?

5.). If raising the wage is good, why not enforce it across all businesses in the area they legislate?

6.). If raising the wage is good, why phase it in over time? Why not put it in affect immediately?

7.). If addition wealth is not created and P&L and maybe balance sheets are affected, does that affect a companies ability to raise cash or increase liquidity?

I really would like to hear reasonable justification and reasonable answers to what are just a few of my questions before I form an opinion.

    So much win!

    And this.

Seriously, the more we reward ambition instead of entitlement, the better off our society will be.

My brother in law dropped out in the 10th-11th grade. Not sure he ever learned to read/write all that well. He busted ass like you did and is one of the best auto body guys in my state.

I've worked in some form or fashion since I was 9 yrs old. Didn't always make a lot of $$ but I did it because I wanted money and am not one for handouts.

When I worked for short money as a youngster it is part of what motivated me to get an education and apply myself, so I didn't have to do that all my life.

    The better coast

Once again, if a child is born to a family who is economically disadvantaged, has a rough time in school, doesnt make it into college and then 10 years later they are still working at the same dead end job because they can't afford to move into a more promising area.....is that still their fault?

For most people in current times that make minimum wage, working hard doesn't guarantee anything because it is more about who you know, where you worked previously, where you live in town, whether your name is too far out of the norm (a black name, an Asian name they can't pronounce, a Muslim name, etc.) and other trivial things that employers will prejudge and throw your application out for.

Depends..if the person hiring them is fooled into thinking it's not the case, or if the person is paying them off the books and keeping their mouths shut
