I was 6 yrs old when he left office, but I've heard the stories from people like my parents..or my inlaws who bought in the early 80's for the first time.

So where does the line get drawn? $15 an hour? Housing assistance? "Obama" phone? EBT? Welfare? WIC? The auto bail out? The bank bail out? How about the bloated size of our government...not just head count but the pay & benefits? Itself a form of public assistance. How about approximately 50% of the population not paying income tax?

I'd be willing to bet, as a country, we are at or near an all time high for public assistance and the ratio of those taking vs supporting the system.

I discussed this a few weeks ago with some colleagues. MA minimum wage is $8. Do I think that's enough to live on, nope. Do I think we could all use a little more, sure. I don't feel that an entry level job is worth roughly double its current pay.

There was a meme I found of a sign on the door of a fast food place which I think said "sorry no burgers today our grill is broken". At least I think so after wading through the horrendous spelling. THAT especially is not $15/hr.

In short, I didn't care for the auto or bank bail out.

Auto I used to but after my experience with GM lying to me and telling me it's normal to need a new engine in 5 yrs after I found all the secret warranties online they tried to deny, I know firsthand why they got in trouble.

Bank..nope. Parallel: My sister ran up about 12k in credit card debt. She got a consolidation loan (a good one, not a scam) and then 6 mos later talked about filing bankruptcy. My father did tell her ultimately the right thing is to pay back, but he said at least if you do file do it before getting the loan. Let the people who gave an 18 yr old with no job thousands in easy credit bear some responsibility for a bad business decision.

First off, who decides that a "developed" society has to be that way i see know successful societies to learn that from.
Second, to look a kid in the eye and tell him hes F'ed would be terrible but to say that to the parents would be most necessary.
Thirdly, I believe in helping others but i think it needs to be state funded not from the WH i know most are but they are carried by the WH. I think the best answer for people in need is the community/family. thats where the help should be coming from and this country seems to have forgotten that because of gov payouts and handouts.
Fourth, I needed help in a time of crisis and welfare was there for me i used it for a few months till i found a job that could sustain my family living at there means not above. The system is broken to many people buying crap food cause its easy to through at the kids with there food stamps people selling their stamps to buy drugs, people using medicaid while driving escalades. I dont like someone else using my hard earned money irresponsibly thats my job.

I didn't go to college and currently make a six figure salary. How/why you may ask. LUCK...some of my success was due to luck. Know the right people, being in the right place at the right time. Most of the people I know who are very successful attribute a portion of their success to luck.
I worked a minimum wage job for a long time. It SUCKS!! Owning a nice Tacoma...Not gonna happen, owning a house...NOT, treating your family to dinner out every once in awhile...HA!!!
The minimum wage as it stands now is a joke. People can't live off minimum wage, families can't survive or get ahead. We need to start think about the big picture. It's not just the minorities, the uneducated, and the lazy ass people who are making minimum wage it's normal American's too! Have you walked into a CVS, Home Depot, Walmart, your local gas station. I've seen a lot of retirees who lost their retirement in the crash, mothers who's husbands lost their jobs, men who worked 30+ years for a company that got laid off without any notice working at these types of jobs. When are people gonna learn that we all rise and fall as one!

That's my rant for the day

Being poor in China isn't the same as being poor in much of the western world.

15% of Americans are below the poverty line. Saying your slightly better than some dirt farmer in China isn't really setting the bar high.

I would never suggest measuring success by anothers failure. That said, there's a HUGE difference in what you're attempting to compare. If you've not had the opportunity to travel to China (or hell even Mexico) and visit some that are truly impoverished you may not grasp the difference. It is not the same as being at or below poverty in the developed countries. Outside the developed worlds walls life can be much crueler.
