And a poor person in China is 100% better than someone living in the Congo. So what? Ignoring a problem because someone elsewhere has it worse is not a good idea. You have a broken arm? Well billy over there has cancer so suck it up.

The fact still stands that 15% of people in the US are under the poverty line. [IMG]
You can't tell me places like this is a nice area to live.

I started working when Minimum wage was 3.85. A 20 oz. coke was about 50 cents and a gallon of gas about a dollar.

Now minimum wage is 7.25, but a coke is 1.90 and gas 3.85.

It is a common lament that kids these days don't know the value of work, but honestly, when it is worth less than half what it was when I was their age, why should they ?

It's worth noting that I'm old enough to remember that every time the minimum wage was increased, predictions of economic demise have failed to materialize. Every single time.

I guess the fact that it removes a little more freedom is a major part of why I am struggling to embrace the minimum wage period. Why can't market forces dictate?

If people feel so strongly, I wonder how many have opened or offered to open their wallets.

I'm not going to pretend the answers because I don't but when 15% of the people in a first world country are "lacking the resources to meet the basic needs for healthy living; having insufficient income to provide the food, shelter and clothing needed to preserve health." Something is wrong. ESPECIALLY as the poor get poorer and the rich get richer and richer. 1% of the people owned 9% of the wealth in 1979 and now they own 24%.

I'm sure most of the people who live in a shit hole wish they could work their way out but the truth is most of them can't. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cycle_of_poverty

Sure there are some shit bags who take advantage of the system but I would rather the system support a handful of shit bags to support the vast majority including innocent kids of people who genuinely need help.

Those people who cant survive need 2 jobs or look into alternitive living ie house mates/living with family.

the amount of shit bags to people in need is turning to the shit bags as ive seen.

For lack of experiencing it yourself you should have a look at some things like infant mortality rates, life expectancy & access to clean water. Maybe then you'll see the difference between poor (with a cell phone & EBT card) & being poor. That's the difference & the so what...

Oh BTW cheeseit, I do applaud your compassion for your fellow man even if we don't see eye to eye on how to help those who might benefit from it.

It actually is much better. In fact, what is considered poverty here isn't considered poverty in certain places I've been at all. My own family (those outside North America) who were born, raised & still live outside North America widely believe we (in the US) have had it so easy for so long that we've lost touch with reality outside our boarders. I'm not sure how old you are (not being sarcastic) but, I'm old enough to remember when cell phones didn't exist. Let alone cell phones being a "right" provided by the government. Do you see how perception & priorities have changed?

    It is 100% doable.

I don't want to pull the privilege card but from what I have read it seemed like you had a fairly good family life and didn't you say your parents owned a factory? That is already a hell of a hand up on a lot of people.

Some people never had a positive role model, some had parents who abused them, some had heavily addicted parents and whatever else. If you want an extreme example look at the Native reservations. Especially up here with the Residential Schools and what they did to the Natives. Kids in that situation are hopeless without help.

I agree with you about the cell phones. That's just insane...

The poverty line really isn't that high of a goal. That's $11,000 according to this. http://www.irp.wisc.edu/faqs/faq1.htm I make more than that working part time while going to University.

I'm not saying that we should just hand people money but there are places you can't make an honest living.
